The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that she smelled fuel in the cabin of the vehicle for approximately one week. An independent mechanic was notified and informed the contact that she was leaking gasoline fuel. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who confirmed that there was a crack in the fuel pump. The fuel pump was repaired. After the repair, the contact was informed of NHTSA campaign id number: 12V459000 (fuel system, gasoline:delivery:fuel pump) but was also informed that her VIN was not included because she did not live in a warm weather state. The failure mileage was 72,295 and the current mileages was 72,982. Updated 12/5/12 the consumer stated the recall was meant only for warm weather states. The consumer feels the recall should apply to this vehicle because in the summer of 2012 Kentucky and surrounding states had record high heat and a drought. Updated 12/10/2012

Equinox 6-cyl

  • 25,500 miles
Noticed a very strong gas smell coming from right rear of vehicle (where gas tank is located). At first I thought it was just a dirty fuel filter, but did some research online and was astounded to find out that approximately 200 2007 Equinox owners were having the same problem. I took my vehicle in for service on 6/26/2012 and was told that the fuel pump was leaking. In my research I discovered that other owners had: Fuel tank leaking; fuel pump and fuel sensor replaced; fuel pressure modular; faulty fuel lines; cracked fuel tank; gas tank seam near pump/sending unit assembly separated & leaking; plastic gas tank had a crack; vapor canister; cracked fuel pump pipe; fuel line from fuel pump to engine cracked; fuel pump module at connector; and on and on and on!!! this appears to be a component failure/manufacturing defect and a recall should be issued. This is a safety and health issue - the potential for one of these vehicles exploding (possibly with deaths) is great. Inhaling gasoline fumes brings concentrated hydrocarbons into your lungs and bloodstream. Some of the ingredients in gasoline are extremely toxic and are mutagens. Liver damage and permanent brain damage are possibilities. Make General Motors do the right thing and issue a recall!!!!!
