This was the first time it happened, I was driving on the highway in the middle of a rain storm. Great timing! No recalls, GM would not pay.

I was driving on the interstate in pouring rain with the wipers on high. The wipers went left and suddenly stopped. This left me in a dangerous situation on a very busy part of the interstate. I pulled over as soon as I could and waited for the rain to slow enough for me to move the wipers back into place. I tried them but they would not work. I got back on the road and pulled off to the side under an overpass. Shut my car off, started it again (hey, it works with computers!) but nothing. Thinking a fuse had blown, I called my son in law to bring a replacement fuse - again, nothing. However, with the windows up, I could hear the motor working but not the wipers. Based on the research I have done on this issue, I believe I have the same problem as other drivers - the wiper transmission is toast. Since this happened only yesterday, I haven't gotten it fixed yet but must get it repaired sooner than later.

GM, this is an incredibly dangerous situation for a driver to find themselves in! I have been one of the fortunate (and happy) Equinox owners who have had minimal problems but this issue seems to be inherent to a manufacturing defect. Please give this the serious attention it deserves and issue a recall to repair this problem. Would you like your family member to be in a rain storm and suddenly lose the use of their wipers? DO THE RIGHT THING, GM!

Equinox LT 2.4L I4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 90,431 miles

Wife was driving vehicle in heavy rainstorm when the wipers stopped working. She was able to pull over on the side of the highway. When I was contacted, I assumed fuse. I searched "Equinox wipers and found a number of broken wiper reports. I got to the car and found the wiper arms decoupled; they swung freely by hand. Found the wiper motor was audibly functioning and spinning freely. Drove car to safety at next exit. Was able to limp through the rain, guided by the stripes; any hazards in the road would not have been seen.

Found used wiper transmission assembly and was able to replace.

Accumuated odd and annoying failures have done this vehicle in, as well as GM's second chance to retain a customer. I've been a lifelong GM buyer but the wife has had enough of cars with random and occasionally dangerous issues.
