Power steering goes out while driving. This is a recall item on the 2008 model year, needs to be a recall on 07-08 years also. Inside door handles brake, making it impossible to get out of the call without rolling down the windows. Both are broken on my car. Been to many Chevy HHR forums and this is a common problem. If you lose power you can not get out of the car.
The power steering feels stiff not able to make right turns without the stiffness. Power steering lights constantly on since this problem occurred. My power steering is electrical and for some reason I believed that the ignition recall my have something to do with this not sure.
2007 Chevrolet HHR. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle headlight and tail light issues. Consumer also has seat belt problems. The consumer stated the tail light went out so often, he carried spares with him. The over head light shorted out. Also, the key would hang up in ignition, which made it difficult to disengage, the shifter would also become stuck in park. The gears did not match up with the gear shift lever.

The gear goes easily without pressing button from reverse to neutral or drive. And the rear view mirror light won't shut off by pressing button. It worked fine before I took it for the recall of the faulty ignition switch.

On several occasions while driving the vehicle the electric power steering failed causing my son to have to pull over quickly as it was quite difficult for him to control the car. We purchased this vehicle used in late 2009 with approximately 30000 miles. A couple years into ownership the car engine began shutting off while driving unexpectedly, 4 times during left hand turns where we were turning into parking lots or driving over a dip in the road. Once over a pothole. It's very scary, left hand turns are dangerous maneuvers anyways, let alone having your car stall while doing it. These incidents occurred before we ever heard of recall. We received the notices in the mail, but parts were not available and the dealer is clearly overwhelmed and annoyed. Our first contact was incredibly rude and put my husband on hold for twenty minutes and then basically said don't call us we will call you and hung up on him.. in may the power steering issue happened while I was driving on the freeway traveling 65mph on a freeway curve during heavy winds. The chime sound was followed by the error message and I became very afraid and the car was very hard to steer. I finally got to shoulder after completely panicking because I did not understand what happened. The car will resume normal operation after turning off for a period and restarting, but it's just a matter of time till it happens again. The recall on the steering is not being covered because my model year is not included in recall even though GM is covering it in other 2007"??" makes no sense. I'm told that they are extending lifetime warranty to original owner but most of these model years are already in resale market so we are excluded, so I guess this will fall on our pockets.. I am very annoyed and I refuse to drive my kids around in this death trap anymore. I asked for loaner finally. I'm done with this thing.

Could not open drivers' side door. Nothing...no-how. In addition the radio would not turn off after key was removed. Took to dealer, they found a defective module located inside the drivers' side door that controlled all this. Not being able to open the drivers side door....having to depend on an electronic gizmo....is absolutely a very dangerous situation. There should be....a simple mechanical over-ride...or better yet, why is opening (and closing?) a door electronic at all? it was definitely fun to contort my 6'1" 250 pound body out the passenger side door. $441, please.........
