This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
The vehicle was experiencing a problem with the housing of the windshield wipers and as a result the wipers did not move at all. Although this defect was on recall the consumer's vehicle was not included due to VIN. Please provide any additional information.
While driving, the vehicle lost its rack and pinion steering and all power of the steering wheel. Dealer notified. The power window control panel on the driver side arm rest popped out, the vehicle pulled severely to the right (dealer couldn't find the problem). The dealer finally replaced the lower control arms, brake rotors, 2 sets of tires/almost completely bald at the time only 13K miles. The rims had to be forced off, the front rotors had become rusted at 20K miles, the ignition wire harness had come apart, the power steering hoses had come loose, lost fluid and power steering while in motion, the trunk leaked, the ABS light had come on twice a week, the front end squeaked and rattled, the antenna wire was loose, the right head lamp had permanent moisture with no crack, the A/C would shut on/off intermittently, the alternator failed at 60K miles and the waning light had come on for only five minutes, the engine leaked oil, and the right windshield wiper pivot housing had broken.
The odometer read incorrectly. The water pump and belt failed. The wiper regulator failed. The tensioner pulley failed. The vehicles rotors warped and the master cylinder failed.
I filed a complaint with NHTSA and GM case # C04015874 in April 01. GM told me to send in copies of my sales contract and other purchase info to prove I purchased it in NY I did that immediately. They also told me to take the car to a dealer and have it inspected and give them the broken pivot part. I then was told at the end of the year after all this misinformation given to me that they weren't going to reinburse me for the part I had to buy to repair the car. The recall said the snow fall causes the part to break and that's what happened-but they won't honor it. Can you do something for me, the part cost $100. Dollars.
Windshield wipers are not clearing the window. Blades are not touching the window properly. Consumer has been to dealer, and had windshield wipers replaced 3 times. But, problem is still present.
The dealer won't pay for the parts because my VIN# don't come up. The car was purchased and is registered in New York one of the snow belt states affected. Originally, the car was sold and delivered in Florida, and that's why my VIN# isn't coming up. Someone has to tell them this car was bought in NY and isn't being used in Florida. My wife almost lost control while driving because the defective parts broke while the wet snow came down.I've just found out that a person at my insurance co, just got there recall and theirs didn't break yet, while mine did. Please help. Sincerely, [xxx]. parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
Pivot drive assembly seized causing the wipers/ transmission to fail but the dealer stated it was not covered under NHTSA campaign id number: 01V068000.
I'm waiting for papers to be sent to me for this complaint. Windshield wipers broke from the snow, and my wife had to slam on the brakes while pulling over cause she couldn't see.
Vehicle experienced same defect as listed in recall 01V068000 concerning windshield wiper linkage: Pivot: Drive assembly cracking due to snow and ice. Windshield wiper stopped operating. Dealer repaired defect at consumer's expense, and did not recognize recall.
While driving about 45 mph windshield wipers stopped working without prior notice. Dealer said there was no recall, recall announced in March 2001, no notification schedule yet. Consumer stated an accident was almost caused due to the faulty wipers.
While driving on the highway at 50 mph, the windshield wipers arm broke. Dealer contacted and the windshield wipers were replaced at owner's expense. Provide further information.
Wiper arm assembly failed during a downpour--arms crossed and wouldn't work. Exact same failure just happened to my sister-in-law who has a new Oldsmobile cutlass, which is basically the same car. I then realized this is a recurring problem which is a significant safety issue.
