The integrated Trailer Brake System provided by GM sucks. It is unreliable and does not work consistently. Worst yet, it annoys you with error messages and constant beeping even when not towing a trailer. It is fairly obvious that GM over-designed a system for trailer hauling that routinely misinterprets what is actually going on with the attached trailer. Worst yet, in its misinterpretations, it makes things even less safe by disabling trailer brakes that are working when it incorrectly thinks there is a problem.
One only has to do a few minutes of searching on the Internet to see that this has been a super annoying problem to many owners of GM trucks who have the integrated Trailer Brake System. The bottom line is that something has happened in the recent years where major truck manufacturers (both GM and Ford) have over-complicated their integrated trailer braking system and this has lead to numerous problems for something that is an easy concept and has been used for decades in trucks.
Trucks hauling trailers with electronic braking on the trailers is not a new concept, but GM has created a nightmare scenario where its $70K plus trucks can not even reliably handle trailer hauling due to this simple issue due directly IMO to the very bad decision making of the software or control systems designers of these integrated trailer brake systems. These designers apparently have never dealt with industrial or farm trailers and have no clue how their choices has lead to this disaster due to their idiotic choices in how to design their control systems. KISS (Keep it Simple Stupid) applies here. These designers need to be fired.
P.S. Dealer service centers are of no help. Multiple GM dealers and mechanics. They can't figure out how to fix it. Their usual strategy of changing parts always bite them and they have egg on their face when you keep bring the truck back after they say they fixed it (the don't fix it) They act clueless to the problem even though there are hundreds if not thousands of complaints on the Internet (YouTube anyone, just search Trailer Brake System for either GM or Ford). Its damn obvious there is something new going on here that the designers need to be fired for creating such a disaster.
