The flex couplers that attach the hard brake lines to the ABS module are rusted to the point they are leaking now. Besides the brake lines, the truck is rust free. This is a 100% safety issue that GM still continues to ignore.

On the expressway on the way from work traveling approx. 50 mph when traffic stopped. I hit the brake pedal and it went to the floor, thank god there was enough distance between cars that I pumped the pedal and downshifted to stop the car. When I had a chance to look for the cause I found out that it was the metal brake line had rusted out ( pin hole). The Chevy dealer indicated the GM doesn't make this line so I have to have line bent by a garage.

This incident has occurred 3 consecutive years. September 2011, 2012, & 2013. All incidents happened driving downhill on my address road. The brakes/brake lines failed/gave out without any warning in all incidents. Brake pedal went completely to floor in all incidents. I was able to shift down in gear all times but luckily I was driving slower & there were no other vehicles in front/behind me. It was difficult to get truck stopped at bottom of hill. I have had 2 repairs to damaged brake lines & now headed for a third at a dealership.

Went to move the truck, brake pedal went to the floor. Left rear line has a leak where the line runs along the frame by the fuel tank. About 2 years ago I had to have the front lines replaced because they were leaking.

Started truck. Put foot on brake pedal. Felt usual resistance at brake pedal. Put truck in drive. Brake pedal went to floor. Brakes had a total failure. Truck rolled across street while I was shifting truck to neutral and trying to stop. Steel brake pipes were not leaking before I started the truck. Steel brake pipes have at least 2 leaks in the pipes now. 1 leak is in the rear brake supply (steel) pipe between the master cylinder and the ABS module. The other leak is in a steel brake pipe near the ABS module. Brakes worked fine, with no leaks, when I had driven the truck a few days before. Failure was sudden and total. I had no brakes as soon as the failure occurred.

Brake line from ABS control to rear wheels, line ruptured due to corrosion. Thankfully I was backing up at a slow speed, brake pedal went to floor as I applied brakes, losing all brake fluid. I replaced the rear section of brake line but need a total brake line replacement but couldn't afford it then and still can't afford to have it done, luckily I don't have to drive the truck for everyday use. Had I been pulling the boat trailer, my enclosed trailer, or just traveling at highway speeds I don't think I would have been able to stop. I have since learned many other SUV and light trucks made by GM in the 1999 to 2006 model years have similar brake line corrosion issues.

Have experienced ABS pulsating and soft pedal several times prior to this incident since approximately 30,000 miles, this truck has been well maintained and has very low miles.

Just North of columbia, SC merging onto I-20, traffic suddenly slowed ahead. I applied the brakes and the brake pedal went to the floor. We managed to slow, utilizing emergency braking and gearing to avoid a crash. After looking at the vehicle, we discovered the rear left brake line had ruptured. We are having it repaired at a GM dealership. The reported diagnosis is brake line corrosion. The dealership is replacing the brake line and purging the brake system to repair the issue.

Traveling on road at posted speed of 35mph approaching a highway intersection. Tried to make a normal stop and brake pedal went to the floor. Truck went through red light and through intersection of a section of highway that is 8 lanes wide. If not for early time of day it would have been a lot more traffic and killed someone. Stopped truck by slamming into park. No brake warning light prior to this or after.

Within a residential neighborhood approaching a stop sign at 30 mph +/- and applied brakes evenly and smoothly. Pedal went to the floor and limited braking available. Proceeded cautiously to a park 2 blocks East. Parked and inspected vehicle. Found brake fluid leaking drivers front at upper back of caliper. Limped vehicle home, placed on stands, pulled wheel and found metal end of flexible brake line adjacent to the hollow bolt that connects to caliper was now multiple layers of rust saturated with brake fluid. Ordered in a replacement line and replaced. Old line retained and excess rust flaked back to reveal a pin hole rust through roughly 1/2 inch above caliper mounting point. Residual braking at time of failure was not capable of stopping a vehicle quickly in traffic or at highway speeds. Three or four years prior rear steel brake lines under bed failed during a panic stop when deer ran into the roadway. Rusted lines were the cause but under high pressure panic stop conditions. Not a gentle stop as the line above.

Backing out of my driveway, I stepped on the brake pedal and a stream of hydraulic brake fluid hit my wife. A brake line had burst and I completely lost brakes. I had vehicle towed to the dealer they charged $650 to replace the rusted brake line that had burst. Now I have lost brakes again 6/21/13 another leak from a rusted out hole in the brake line. I purchased this truck new in 2000 and it has remained in Florida the entire time. We have no road salt, we have no snow. How can you build a vehicle with brake lines that rust out?. please help and recall this dangerous problem before innocent people get killed!

I live in Connecticut and I have a 2000 Chevy Silverado K1500 ext cab 5.3L truck with 198000+ miles on it. The truck has been garaged just about its whole life since I bought it brand new. Last week my wife was driving the truck to the store. While coming to a stop sign just down the street the brakes failed. Fortunately she was coming to a stop and wasn't going fast with no one in front of her. She walked back to the house and I went down to find that a brake line had busted behind the drivers wheel on the frame rail before it goes over the frame to the ABS module. I had the truck towed back to my house and put in the garage to inspect it. I am amazed on how much that all of the brake lines are rusted. Some areas of the line when I touched it just fell apart in my hands. I have been hearing that just about everyone I know who owns 1999-2003 Chevy trucks are having brake line failing due to cheap steel rusted lines. While I was under the truck I also noticed that one of the cross members that support the right rear shock plus the gas tank is supported off of is rusted with only half a tube left. Plus just about all of my gas lines have serious rust on them. My other issue is that the rocker panels on both sides of the cab are rusted threw to a point that you can stick your hand in them. When is Chevy going to get off their butt and do something about this. The brake lines, fuel lines & cross member corrosion are safety issues that should be dealt with before people get hurt or worst killed.

Customer went to apply brakes coming down a steep hill. Brake pedal went all the way to the floor. Vehicle was wrecked to the repair shop the next day. Upon inspection, all brake lines from the master cylinder to the wheels were rusted and corroded. The place where the leak happened was right at the ABS pump. Both lines for the front and rear braking systems burst before the ABS pump causing a complete loss of brakes. I have worked on many Chevrolet of this model and all seem to have the same problem. This particular one has always been a North Carolina vehicle. Has never been up North.

The mechanic stated that the rear shackles would have to be replaced. Additionally, the brake lines were found to be corroded. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
