A couple of months ago I noticed a strong coolant smell whenever I drove my Tahoe. I spent weeks trying to find it. It wasn't overheating, and wasn't losing a ton of coolant, but I did have to top it off every 4 or 5 weeks for about 3 months. It finally got bad enough the last time I popped the hood to search for it that it was still spraying out of the coolant system quick connect on top of the intake. Sure enough it was the infamous heater core quick connect, and sure enough I was right taking the "pay the man" approach because even my mechanic using proper removal methods broke it off in the intake. It's been replaced now with updated versions of the connector and heater core hose and is running fine.
