The key has a chip of some kind and sometimes the key wouldn't turn the switch on. We have another key that has no chip and we just use it in case we have to unlock the door. We can put that key in the switch and turn it and then we can use the key with the chip and it starts the car. What would cause the switch to lock up until you put the other one in and turn it?
I have searched extensively on different message boards regarding this problem. Multifunction switch failures are VERY common with PT Cruisers. Typical evidence of multifunction switch failure is having the fog light go on when you use your turn signal then progressing to the point when the fog lights simply will not go out unless your remove the proper fuse or your battery goes dead. The cost of a replacement, if ordered on line, is as low as $58.00, including shipping, for some websites. Supposed to be fairly easy for handy people to replace, but would probably cost a 1 hour minimum labor charge if done by a garage. Given how common this failure is, and the potential for fire from failure of switch, a recall should be issued.
