CarComplaints.com Notes: The second generation Durango was introduced in 2004 and instantly came under fire for, well, catching on fire.

From 2004-2006 electrical overloading in the driver's side instrument panel caused numerous reports of interior fires. The interior infernos became so commonplace that Chrysler eventually issued a recall.

The problems didn't stop there, however. Owners of the recalled vehicles complained about being treated unfairly and given take-it-or-leave-it low ball settlement offers. "They offered me $2000 under NADA retail as a settlement," said one owner, "and have been rude and hostile to deal with." Nothing says awesome service like treating your customers rudely after their cars have caught on fire.

Have we mentioned all the reports of complete engine failure due to oil sludge?

I have a 2004 Dodge Durango with 73,600 miles. For the last couple of months it's been acting up. The second I slow to a stop or put it in park, the rpms start jumping around. It has stalled on me several times. When I accelerate the rpms spike and it doesn't seem to want to go, but jerks like it is going to stall and then takes off. It's kind of scary. I've taken it to several shops, but they can't find why it is doing this. I took it to auto zone today and had it hooked up to their diagnostic machine. They said that it isn't coding anything to be wrong. When I googled the problem, I was amazed to see how many people are having the same problem. I'm wondering if Dodge has looked into this and why there isn't a recall "?"

There was almost a multi car crash!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the car quit in the middle of driving into an intersection through oncoming traffic. I'm told by dealer the engine failed and needs to be replaced. The oil has been changed, and the car has been maintained. Yet the engine failed and needs to be replaced!! many similar complaints are on www.carcomplaints.com several of the people were Dodge fans, and one used to buy autos at auction. This is not a maintenance issue. This is a defective auto, with real safety concerns. This car is only 4 years old!! evidently there is a class action lawsuit about this engine type for failure. In heavy traffic, this is very serious. In South Florida nobody can afford to be driving and then have their vehicle suddenly fail and lose power!! this is extremely dangerous!

I own a 2004 Dodge Durango. I was driving about 40 mph and it just stalled. I waited a few minutes and it started back and drove just fine. I took it to the dealership and they stated that it is a problem. They advised me to drive it and if it does it again, to bring it back. However, after doing research on the net I found that this model has the tendency to stall. I'm shocked that Dodge did not have an answer for me.

I was approaching a red light and was slowing to a stop. As I slowed down to maybe 10 miles an hour, the vehicle stalled or shut off. I had no power steering or anything. Managed to put the vehicle in park and it restarted. Never done it since, but I have recently learned of many others who have had this problem with their 2004 Dodge Durango. Thanks

The contact owns a 2004 Dodge Durango. When slowing down from 30 mph to make a turn or attempting to accelerate afterwards, the vehicle stalls. The dealer stated that the computer acceleration and idle chip needed to be reprogrammed. The vehicle was taken several times to have the idle and acceleration chip reprogrammed and the failure was not permanently corrected. The vehicle will be taken again for a new diagnosis. The manufacturer was notified and issued a reference number. The current mileage was 50,161 and failure mileage was 10,000. Updated 3/4/08

The contact owns a 2004 Dodge Durango. While approaching a stop at 10 mph, the vehicle stalled and the steering failed. The instrument panel lights illuminated and the radio remained activated. The contact placed the vehicle in park, shut off the engine, and restarted the vehicle in order for it to operate normally. She took the vehicle to a mechanic and had a diagnostic performed, but no failures were found. The failure mileage was 36,100 and current mileage was 37,000.

I purchased a 2004 Durango in Nov of 2006. I had no real problems with vehicle until recently. Took vehicle in to dealership for recall of instrument panel. Dealership took care of this and 2 weeks later temperature gauge started reading hotter then usual. Contacted dealership who then stated unrelated. Recently went on vacation and 300 miles from home vehicle temp gauge read hot. Pulled off interstate to nearest service station. No dealership near here. Mechanic found no codes to indicate problem. Replaced water pump, thermostat, hoses, check radiator, new fluids, bill total 377 dollars. 3 miles later car still trying to over heat. Towed to va for 1,000 dollars now at dealership. Car also seems to sometimes not be in gear when placed in drive and you try to accelerate engine just revs. At dealership now we shall see what they say.

We were traveling up an incline and reached it's peak at about 40mph. It was at this time that the vehicle stalled and lost power. No power steering and hardly any breaking power. We were able to pull the car over onto a side road. We put the car into park and it restarted immediately. Very dangerous as I was carrying my young daughter with me. This was the second time this has happened. The first time I shrugged it off but the second time was scary hence this complaint. After doing some research, I found that this is a pretty common occurrence and is under investigation by the NHTSA: EA05018.

My 2004 Dodge Durango which I purchased new, has stalled several times without any warning /lights coming on etc. This has happened at low speeds and I was able to restart the vehicle. I have not reported to the dealer yet as it has just started happening and I checked NHTSA website for recalls/complaints to research first. Apparently I am not the only one with this issue. Vehicle only has 37000 miles on it. This could be a safety issue!

Durango 6-cyl

My 2004 slt Dodge Durango was serviced for a routine oil change @42000 miles and the dealership did a routine point check evaluation. On Feb. 10, 2007 @ 10:45 am while stopping at a traffic light, the vehicle began to lose speed before coming to a complete stop, the engine stopped responding & the panel lights started blinking on & off, then a burning smell started & smoke started to come out of the drivers panel and I exited the vehicle before physical harm could be done to me. I called 911 and they had the fire department to respond. My vehicle was completely engulfed with flames before they arrived. The entire interior of the vehicle was burned beyond recognition. It was extremely unnerving to be a part of this, I had not had any problems out of my vehicle before this horrible incident. It is just unthinkable to realize that I have been driving my two kids in my Durango every day for the past 2 years and thanks to the lord above that they were at home on this morning, while I went to pick up the girl scout cookie orders for my daughter, which were in the back of the Durango when it went up in smoke. This incident will financial impact my family greatly. The car is now a total loss.

We recently purchased a used 2004 Dodge Durango limited. Equipped with the 5.7L hemi. We have owned the SUV for just under 90 days and on three separate occasions the engine has stalled when my wife was backing out of our driveway and shifting into drive. I spoke with a Dodge dealership on the phone a few days ago and they offered little help. I intend to call them in the morning and set up an appointment to have them look at it. This is the vehicle my wife uses to Transport our two young boys to pre-school and herself to work. This is very concerning to us because the truck dying in the driveway is one thing, but what if the next time they are on the highway or in the middle of an intersection.

: the contact stated while driving 40 mph or less the engine stalled and lost power without warning. Afterwards, the vehicle was easily restarted. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for inspection. The dealer performed a diagnostic test that produced no failures codes. The service department was unable to duplicate the problem. The contact claimed that vehicle shut off/stalled off 8 times in 16 months, and has been at dealership 4 times and nothing has been replaced or repaired, and it continued to shut off while coming to a stop. This was a safety problem.

The vehicle has stalled on several occasions, while driving and while stopped. On two occasions the vehicle failed to restart for an hour or so. When the engine stalls the power components associated with the safe operation of the vehicle also are effected (ie steering, brakes, etc.). this has led to a couple of near collisions on the freeway and surface streets. This is a problem that needs to be addressed. I have voiced my concerns to other owners that are having the same issues even after tsb items have been performed. The transmission also fails to engage when shifting from park into drive or reverse gears.

I bought a 2004 Dodge Durango in November 2004. VIN [xxx]. [xxx]. I have had numerous problems with the vehicle, including the vehicle silently ceasing to operate. This has happened 3 times in motion, very nearly causing very serious motor vehicle crashes. 1 occurrence happened while stationary and in park. All of this has happened in the 1st year of ownership. Additionally, the vehicle failed to come out of park numerous times; when placed into drive, failed to engage and would simply idle; and had numerous electrical quirks that are not safety related. Each time we have taken the vehicle into the dealer, simply to be told "unable to duplicate." Just recently, we were told Chrysler was aware of the vehicle ceasing to operate without warning while driving. We were told Chrysler refused to acknowledge the issue or fix it, and have been pressuring dealerships to send the vehicles back out with the customer in the same unsafe and deadly condition. Chrylser refuses to acknowledge us or the problem, and 3 times now my family has been placed in peril because Chrysler won't recall these defective vehicles or spend money to fix them.
