When I first got the 'check engine light', I got O'Riley's to check the codes. Since then, I've taken the car to Wills Point Ford for repairs. $1000 later they said the problem was fixed. One week later the 'light' was back on. I took it to another mechanic and was charged for a set of spark plugs (even though Ford charged me for a full set 3 weeks prior) and a coil on cylinder 3. My final trip to another mechanic finally established the Technical Service Bulletin 19-2208 which detailed the problem with coolant leaking in the cylinders. The solution: $6300 for a short block and repairs. I feel that Ford should man up and admit their screw-up after all this time and expense. It seems I'm not the only one experiencing this problem. I'm probably also not the only one who has purchased his last Ford.

Edge SE 2.0L

The problem started off with the check engine light coming on and overheating. The Edge was swallowing antifreeze at a crazy rate. Then, while driving, the engine overheat warning came on and the power was decreased to zero forcing me to pull over. There was white smoke coming out and it had a terrible smell.

I took my car to Pep Boys, and they said the Edge was misfiring on 2 cylinders. Their solution was to change the ignition coils. I got the Edge back and it was no better, and the check engine light came back on again and it would not start. I returned it to Pep Boys again, and this time they said the idle control valve was bad. They replaced it, and upon picking it up the check engine light came right back on again. I again returned it to Pep Boys, and this time they said I had dirty oil (even though I had a synthetic oil change 3 weeks prior), so they flushed out the engine oil and installed new spark plugs/tune-up. I picked the Edge up later that day, and again the check engine light came on.

Having had enough of Pep Boys, I finally took my Edge back to my local Ford Dealership for service. They said that the entire engine needed to be replaced due to coolant leaking into 3 cylinders. The dealer said this is a well-documented problem with the 2017 Ford Edge 2.0L EcoBoost engine.

I only wish someone pointed this engine issue out when I bought it!

We are seniors on a fixed income . We still owe over $10,000 on the car. The check engine light came on so we too to Ford dealer to be checked out. We were told it need a new motor. We can't afford repairs, can't sell it . We only have one car. We care for great grandchildren that need picked up from school. Very angry we never were sent a recall ! No compensation from Ford at on and we have been longtime customers. Have no idea what we are going to do. I see Ford was well aware of the problem and changed motors and left the customers with old engine stranded in Hell! We will never buy another Ford!!! Please help correct this disregard of customers.

Update from Sep 8, 2023 Ford is now quotes our repair at $7500 appears much higher than others on this site. We will never get what we owe. A big loss!

Coolant has been disappearing from my vehicle for almost two years and I could not find the leak so I kept topping it off. White smoke billowing from the tail pipe, shaking vehicle while driving then it will lose power and slow down to 35mph while driving 75mph on the highway without notice. Now the vehicle will not start and had it towed to my local Ford dealership. Now I am reading about all of the complaints of similar issues with this model and am blown away that NHTSA has not forced Ford to recall even when they have acknowledged the issue via TSB. Ford needs to recall now and take care of the consumer as this is a $7,000 fix.

Purchased 2017 Ford Edge new from dealership with extended warranty and service package. While driving 50 KM ph check engine light came on along with warning the vehicle was overheating. Pulled over and had the vehicle towed to dealership to be told coolant had leaked in to the engine and the entire engine needed to be replaced at a cost of over 10,000 CAD. Car was only 5,000 miles outside of extended warranty. After advocacy from the dealership Ford Canada reduced cost of repair to $6,000. This engine issue is a known problem to Ford with class action lawsuits having been filed in both Canada and the US. This is a signficant safety concern for which Ford refuses to take responsibility by recalling or covering the cost of repairs.

This is a known problem for Ford Eco Boost engines where they have failed to recall vehicles that obviously should have been recalled. I have seen numerous complaints about this issue with cooling fluid leaking into the cylinders where people have been told that an engine replacement was necessary. Really? Numerous complaints without Ford recalling or at minimum extending the warranty. My car was less than the warranty of 50000 miles but was six years old so I was given a cost of $11,000 to replace the long block. Fortunately I have a friend who negotiated with Ford to get the price down to $4600. This is beyond anything I have experienced in all my years of owning cars. I will never buy another Ford.

After engine light was on. I checked by using OBD scanner. Cylinder 2 was misfired. I bought a set of OEM spark plugs and replaced and killed engine light . I used camera and checked four cylinder heads when I replaced spark plugs, super clean, I'm surprised. I knew my coolant getting into engine because I poured almost half gallon of coolant during one year. There is no any coolant leaking to outside of car. After new spark plugs was on, few weeks later, engine lights was back and the same issue on Cylinder at misfired.

Coolant seems to disappear, no puddles, so I know it is not leaking. The check engine light goes off and on randomly. I've had a mechanic look at it a couple times, he said I may have got a lemon, but suggested I change out the spark plugs and wire harness for the spark plugs. That did not help. There is white smelly smoke that comes out of the exhaust, usually just when I start the vehicle. I have not noticed in change in the way the vehicle operates, until today. It didn't start up like normal, more smoke than normal, the check engine lights came back on (it was off for 2 weeks), and now it runs rough.

Edge Titanium 2.0 Ecoboost

Just bought the car and thank goodness our car lot put a factory type warranty on it through ASC. I haven't even drove the car 500 miles yet and I started hearing water running sounds when I was driving it. Then the check engine light came on. Off to the shop to have it checked and they thought it was just a bad plug so they changed it. The code was "misfire on cylinder 2". They also ran a head gasket test which passed.

I drove it one day and the light came back on with the same code. I took it into the shop again and they ran multiple tests before finally sticking a camera in the engine. This is when they saw the coolant spilling into the number 2 cylinder. The complaints logged here helped tremendously in getting the shop to do more than just run the head gasket test, so thank you to everyone who has posted.

Now on to the ASC warranty company. They agree to replace the engine, but are being insistent on only paying part of the cost, leaving me with a few thousand out of pocket - even though my warranty papers say it covers replacement parts not to exceed the value of the car. I know my 2017 that I just paid over $20,000 for is still worth more than the $8,000+ that the engine will cost. I won't give up without a fight! I may be a female, but I'm not stupid!

coolant leak into cylinder

This problem started at around 55K miles but I didn't get to the bottom of it until this week when Ford diagnosed it. In the meantime I've replaced the ignition coil at cylinder 2. Also, the car has a shuddering cold start and even stalls. Car misfires and can't exceed 60 mph. Took to Ford for Diagnostic which reported that "the engine assembly has an internal coolant leak at the 1-3 cylinders and has coolant intrusion at the 1 and 3 cylinders." The report referenced Ford's Technical Service Bulletin 19-2346 and diagnostic trouble codes P0301-P0303.

Dealer wants $8300 to replace the Long Block. I contacted Ford Corp. who got the price down to $6,400 and said they'd share cost and my share is $2,900. Also, I'll have to rent a car for at least 2 weeks while they fix it. I don't feel I should be responsible to pay for the repair of a defective product.

Edge Titanium 2.0L Ecoboost

  • Automatic transmission
  • 70,000 miles

At just over 70,000 miles, the Check Engine light came on. We noticed that the car ran rough just after starting it, and occasionally while driving. Having bought the car used from a dealership, there was no repair warranty. We paid over $2800.00 to correct the issue, which included practically a complete top end rebuild. Less than 20,000 mile later, the exact issue recurred.

Our mechanic found a Technical Service Bulletin describing this exact issue on 5 different Ford models covering 5 model years. The fix: replace the engine! So, Ford knowingly sold vehicles with engines that would need to be replaced, and refuses to take responsibility.

I contacted Ford regarding compensation for the repair and was told that since there is no recall, Ford will do nothing regarding this issue.

Since then, I have learned that there is a class-action suit for this. I will definitely add my name to this suit.

Most importantly, though, I WILL NEVER AGAIN SPEND MONEY ON A FORD PRODUCT.

Edge SEL 2.0L Four cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 110,000 miles

I just purchased my 2017 Ford Edge in February. I am currently financing this vehicle. At the end of August my check engine light came on. I had it checked out, it read a cylinder 2 misfire, but before I could take it in to the shop not even a week later to have this fixed the car started to overheat and smoke really bad. The next day when I went to take it to the mechanic the vehicle would not start. I had to pay to tow it to my mechanic, only to be told that the engine locked up and the entire engine needs replaced. There is no way I should have to replace an engine on a 2017. I have researched this and there are MULTIPLE complaints about this same exact issue where the coolant is leaking into the cylinders and blowing the engine. Ford has failed to issue a recall and it is costing people thousands of dollars. I am stuck financing a vehicle that I cannot drive nor afford to fix. Ford needs to address this issue.

Just informed by our local Ford dealer that the engine will have to be replaced at just 80,000 miles. Got a second opinion with the same results. Both told us they have seen many of these same issues with the Ford Edge. Parts are difficult to get right now so it could be months before repair is done. We are being forced to trade it in at a discount and buy a new car. I'm done with Ford.

Edge Titanium AWD 2.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 65,000 miles

I am the second owner of this vehicle. This edge was a leased car with around 30,000 miles on it in 2020.

The engine light was on in June, and I noticed that the coolant was low. It took 2 months to schedule an appointment with a local Ford dealership for a diagnostic.

They diagnosed the following: - Got code P0303 P0316. Ran oasis, found TSB 22-2229 states possible coolant intrusion in cylinder. - Ran engine to normal operating temp and pressurize cooling system for 5 hours. - Pressure drops 10 PSI. Removed spark plugs and borescope inspected, found coolant in #3 cylinder. - Rec long block as per TSB. - Reference to service bulletin #22-2229 Issue: Some 2015-2018 Edge and 2017-2019 Fusion/Escape/ Vehicles equipped with a 2.0L EcoBoost engine may exhibit a low coolant level, white exhaust smoke and/or a runs rough condition with or without an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL). ..... - Recommendation of the repair estimate $6930.64 plus tax. Estimate includes parts & labor.

Unfortunately, I am a few months or few thousands miles out of the powertrain warranty. With the tax and a month of rental car, the total cost of replacing this lower engine block failure would be close to $9000. I haven't decided if I should get it fixed yet. The car has a noticeable variation when starting. However, it is running okay, beside the coolant tank is at lower level. I am not sure how long would the new long block would last, or if there is an improvement made to the long block design to prevent the same issue. This is probably my LAST Ford.
