While driving through a parking lot the drive shaft dropped out. It was later determined the rear lower trailing support arms on both the left and right side had rusted through causing them to break apart. This resulted in the rear axle shifting and the drive shaft snapping away from the rear axle. If this happened at a high speed this incident could have resulted in loss of life, severe injuries and property damage.

I am in need of your assistance with a potential claim against the Ford Motor Company. On Saturday, December 19, 2009, my 1998 Ford Expedition initiated a fire in my garage which completely destroyed my entire home with all contents and two vehicles. Please review the following website: www.waff.com/global/story.asp?S=11708004.

My wife was driving her 1998 Ford Expedition on the highway when her spare tire suddenly fell from beneath the vehicle and kicked up the rear end. Fortunately, she did not lose control, and the cars behind her were able to swerve around the loose tire without incident. Upon inspection, we found that the cable which supports the spare tire snapped off at the end. Our local Ford dealer says there is no recurrent problem, and that we can purchase a new spare tire carrier (just like the defective one) for $100. However, with a simple search online, I found numerous documented cases just like mine where the spare tire mechanism failed and loose tires have caused crashes and injuries. I do not think it is responsible to put these vehicles back on the road when the tire can fall out at any moment.

Hello, my name is [xxx] and I live in martinez, ca. I have a 1998 Ford Expedition with approximately 111,000 miles on it. I recently had a spark plug pop out while driving. After researching the root cause of the problem I determined that it is inherent in my type of engine. There are a number of websites with stories of Ford owners who experienced identical problems. One of the websites is: www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/ford_spark.html this is a nationwide problem. Can you please look into it. The cost to repair this problem is approximately $3,000. Thank you, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

This has occurred 8 or 9 times in the last 4 weeks' (the most recent being 01/14/2003) my 98 E/B 4X4 recently began over accelerating at intermittent times. (I live in mn, and have noticed this problem is worse when the temp is below zero.) I have had 2 minor accidents already because out of the blue my vehicle takes off as though it is going 70 miles an hour. The brakes do not seem to work when this is occurring. In order to stop this from occurring, I need to quickly shift into neutral, which causes the engine to rev up to 4500 RPM. I have tried restarting the engine multiple times, and kicking down the gas pedal, and each time the RPM remains high. When I am traveling at highway speeds, and this begins to occur, the engine revs to 3000 RPM, and drives itself at 65-70 mph (acts almost as if the cruise is set). I have been stranded twice now, and have found that once the vehicle sits for 10 minutes or so, it seems to be ok.

The air conditioning compressor broke. Due a defective bolt the belt slipped off, and the car stopped in the middle of the freeway. Also, the engine check light kept coming on. Upon notification of dealer, the mechanic stated that the light was on because of the belt slipping off. Repair work was done. The bolts were replaced, and the light still came on. The dealer cannot duplicate the problem.
