problem #3

Nov 212015

Expedition LTD 5.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 124,274 miles

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

Engine revs up while driving, doesn't matter if engine is hot or cold. Never know when it will do it. I could go a month and not have it happen, then it will do it four times in a hour. No codes come up on scan. It almost feels like if you put it in neutral and revved the engine .Kicking the gas peddle down sometimes corrects it.

Expedition Eddie Bauer 5.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 108,000 miles

The Expedition drivetrain has been a mess. I love the vehicle but the engine heaves and coughs, no engine light comes on or when it does I check the codes and change what it states and then a new problem pops up a few weeks later. The engine will accelerate and the truck heaves and sputters. It stays around 40MPH and does nothing but act like its dying.

I have searched across the internet and numerous people have this same issue. Some change the engine, some change the phaser cams, sensors, coil packs, spark plugs, MAF sensors, transmission, O2 sensors, oil VCT solenoids, and the list of attempts goes on and on!!! AND NEVER A FIX. What a crap design. WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO FORD TOUGH????? Almost everyone seems to dump between $2,000 to $4,000 into this thing before it seems to 'get better'

How could FORD produce a car without better diagnostics? I hate to take it into the dealer as all the folks that did seemed to get ripped off even worse. They are so familiar with the problem they have learned how to bilk you in incremental fashion. OR jump right to an engine change, and then claim the tranny is the problem.

WHY IS THERE no recall on this with so many problems. I had the car die on me 250 miles away from my home. Thank god I was the driver and not one of my daughters or my wife.

Help - I'm in desperate need of some assistance and hoping (while it's not a good thing) that someone else has experienced the same issues/problems. I have been driving my Mothers 2005 Ford Expedition since her passing away suddenly. I was driving home from work one day and the car seemed to take a life of it's own. I almost hit an ambulance. I drop it immediately to dealership. They indicated that it was in need of a new transmission. I explained that while I was driving, stop and go traffic - the car jumped forward about 5 times and the engine seemed to rev very high....and then I was stomping on brake to make it stop and it wouldn't. I've NEVER had this happen before in all the years/cars I've driven. It did it a few more times and thankfully I was able to get it to the dealer safely. I walked away w/a $3,200 bill and a new tranmission at the end of August.

NOW two weeks ago - car doing same thing....I watched it carefully - wondering if it was my imagination.....couldn't possibly be anything wrong - I'd just had it fixed only 3mos prior. No warning lights came on during any of these incidences. The final straw for me was just last week I was picking my daughter up from Middle School. Waiting in the string of cars picking up kids - she'd just gotten into vehicle. We're waiting in the trail of cars with children EVERYWHERE and the car does it again. I'm an extremly good defensive driver so if I had not had the skills and caution to keep some distance between myself and the car ahead......I would've hit the kids in front of me. I was so shaken up. Called dealer immediately.

They've now had the car 2 days and they say nothing is wrong with it. My daughter was witness - she'd been in it twice when this happened. Despite what I paid to get it fixed - I could NEVER live with hitting anyone or getting into an accident. The car will just do the exact same thing it did before it was supposidly "fixed". I'm at a loss - I've read a few complaints that sound similar to my experience either listed under transmission or throttle problems. To recap - this is a BIG vehicle to boot - could do a lot of damage if I were to hit someone. When this happens I can even be at a complete stop. The engine rev's...jumps forward.....i'm trying to break and I can't...and then it's calm down and drive fine. What could this be??

Please any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I read someone's post saying "What will it take for Ford to recognize this - someone to die"??..... Thanks for any help you can give.
