Some "bright" design engineer decided that it would be good to design a gas tank that did not need a gas cap, so you wouldn't have to go to all the trouble of removing the gas cap to fill your tank each time, and maybe loosing the cap, so he thought it good to get rid of the cap, and instead have some sort of automatically closing inner cap that only open when you insert the gas pump nozzle. He also added a censor inside that lets you know if the automatically closing cap/door is not closing properly. It was doomed to fail, and so it does. If there is the slightest piece of trash, or wear on the closing mechanism and it does not make the proper contact you get the error message "CHECK FUEL FILL INLET."
I bought the car used, it has done that ever since I bought it from a Chevrolet used car lot. I took it to a Ford dealer and asked about the problem. They wouldn't offer a suggestion as to how to fix it, they only want me to bring it in and let them check it out. I am sure that it would not be cheap to fix, and then I am also sure that it will keep having that problem through the years, because it is just a VERY BAD design.
I keep having to push "reset" on the dash to get the error message to go away, but as soon as the engine is stopped and restarted the error message is back again. I hope that deign engineer no longer works for the Ford Motor company.
