F-150 4.9L V6

1992 Ford F-150 is in extremely great condition with only 72,000 miles. Vehicle has been parked inside for quite a while and the previous owner only started occasionally. After purchasing vehicle, I drove approx. 12 miles to DMV to get vehicle licensed. Vehicle drove exceptionally well. After leaving DMV and while traveling home, the vehicle suddenly had no power while sitting in traffic. It felt as if I were trying to start out in 3rd gear. After pulling off roadway and shutting off the engine for several minutes, I started the vehicle and drove away. However, after about 1/2 mile the vehicle again lost power. This happened several times before I was able to limp the vehicle to a nearby Ford garage. The service dept said that it sounded like a fuel pump? Anyone have any suggestions???

F-150 Straight 6

  • Manual transmission
  • 188,000 miles

Was sitting at a stop light about a week ago and the idle rpm increased rapidly. Very strange, never has happened before. A couple days later the engine began shutting off while driving. Felt like the engine was fuel starved but it would start right back up and continue on. Now it does this everytime I start the engine and it continues for a while. I can keep the engine running by working the gas pedal but it sounds horrible and smokes really bad. The "check engine" light comes on immediately when this happens and there is a strong fuel odor in the exhaust. I have found what I believe to be part of the problem but I don't know what is causing it. When the ignition switch is turned to the "on" position (before engaging the starter) you are supposed to hear the fuel pump pressurize the system; this is supposed to last for about a second. In my case, the fuel pump never shuts off; it continues to pump. This happened 5 out of 6 times just now. On the 6'th time the pump shutoff like it's supposed to and I started the engine; it ran perfectly for about 10 seconds then the "check engine" light came on and the engine died. I don't know what is causing this.

My everyday vehicle was my '92 F150... I love this truck, true, has a ton of miles, but had a new motor 60,000 ago. Just wanted to put this out as a problem. The truck ran awesome. 4.9 straight six is the torque monster and can't be beat. but all of a sudden, the truck has no power. feels like a fuel problem, barely starts, when it does it idles fine, but once you try to move the truck wants to stall, rev it up and pop the clutch and you can get going but shift into 2nd and it bucks like it's running out of gas. new fuel pumps(front and rear tanks) a year ago, performs the same on both tanks, and I just don't know...
