This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. While driving 50 mph, the gears shifted without warning and caused the rear tires to seize. The vehicle was taken to the dealer (charlie henderson Ford Inc, 105 U S 90, waveland, ms 39576, (228)-467-9005) for diagnostic testing, but no errors were found. The contact stated that the failure continued. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 68,000. *
The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. While driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle downshifted from fourth gear to first gear and the rear wheels seized. The contact had to pull over to the shoulder and turn off the vehicle. After approximately two minutes, the vehicle was restarted and operated normally. The contact also stated that the failure occurred on a daily basis for two weeks. The vehicle was taken to the dealer (future Ford of sacramento, 4625 madison ave., sacramento, California, (916) 547-2285) for diagnostic testing, but the results were unknown. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 83,200.
Transmission would downshift for no reason. Also sometimes it would try to start off in the wrong gear. Turning the engine off and on resets the issues, but it come back. Dealer fixed the issue, around $1000.
Once the truck is idling, after a few moments a wrench logo is displayed and all the tach gauges turn off and the acceleration is sluggish. Sometimes when driving the truck doesn't leave 1st gear or it'll bounce around gears. When the truck is turned off and then turned back on, everything can go right back to nornal. Having this issue is a major safety issue if the vehicle stalls in traffic or worse. Many reports are made on the internet's and I haven't seen a recall. Funny how the 2011-12 models have an oasis on it but not the 2013 granted it's plagued by the same issue.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the speedometer failed to function, there was a sudden loss of power, and the vehicle inadvertently downshifted. The dealer (grand ledge Ford, 6080 E saginaw hwy, grand ledge, mi 48837, 517- 627-8100) stated that the transmission lead frame needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified and suggested that the vehicle be diagnosed and repaired by a dealer. The approximate failure mileage was 111,000.
Truck was having issues with randomly disengaging from cruise control, loss of power from a stop, and erratic downshifting. On the highway the cruise control would disengage, speedometer would go to 0 then back to its actual speed. From a stop sign/stop light, when the light would turn green the truck would spit and sputter, shifting erratically, RPM would go up but no power. When cruising around 45mph truck downshifted for no reason causing a loud clunking sound, this happened twice consecutively. Took is to simmons rockwell to get it diagnosed, after I had already researched the issue and knew what it was, and they replaced the molded lead frame in the transmission. This was exactly the issue they had that caused the recall on the 2011/2012 models. The repair cost was @ $500. I was just reading an article which stated that the NHTSA may order another recall which would include the 2013 model.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the vehicle experienced independent downshifting while being operated at various speeds. The failure occurred without warning. The vehicle was taken to jones Ford (510 florence rd, savannah, tn), but was not diagnosed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist since there were no recalls for the failure. The contact was informed to call NHTSA to have the VIN added to a recall. The failure mileage was 70,500.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. While driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle downshifted on its own. The contact continued driving to a complete stop due to heavy traffic. The contact switched into neutral and turned off the vehicle. The vehicle was turned off, restarted, and operated normally. The contact stated that the same failure occurred previously and the yellow wrench warning indicator illuminated. The contact turned the vehicle off and restarted it again. The dealer and an independent mechanic were not contacted. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 55,000.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. While driving 45 mph, the engine made an abnormal noise, the rpms increased, and the vehicle decelerated rapidly and almost came to a complete stop. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was approximately 81,000.
At highway speeds mph drops to zero transmission shifts to 5th gear airbag and seatbelt lights come on. To reset truck must be stopped turned off and restarted. Other times speedometer is erratic and transmission shifted erratic also even to first gear at hwy speeds.
My truck had 3 separate incidences, the first two times the truck would downshift without warning and the tachometer would jump around sporadically while the truck lurched. The third incident would be that taking off from a cold start the vehicle would start out in 5th gear and the speedometer would not move from 0.
I was driving roughly 30 mph down a residential street with some loose rocks (due to a recent storm) when my F150 suddenly dropped into first gear causing my rear wheels to lock and slide a bit. I was going straight and there was nothing out of the ordinary going on.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford F-150. While driving various speeds, the vehicle shook as the accelerator pedal was depressed. The contact also stated that the vehicle felt as if it were in neutral. The vehicle was taken to the dealer (taylor Ford, 13500 telegraph road, taylor, mi 48180), but the cause of the failure could not be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. He manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was approximately 89,000.
While driving 75mph vehicle shifted from 6th to 3rd on the highway. Check engine light came on. After putting into park and turning off truck and restarting it the check engine light was off and vehicle drove fine for about another week. This time, while driving the vehicle shifted from 6th to 4th and check engine light came on. I was able to pull the code since turning the truck on and off didnt reset anything. The code was P0720 output speed sensor "leadframe". odometer, mph, speed, trip, fuel usage did not work. Rpms worked and the gear I was in worked.
While driving to work today, and making a right hand turn, my vehicle completely shut off. That is, the engine died, the power steering died, and the brakes died while the truck came to a complete stop in the middle of the lane. Let me reiterate - the truck completely died in the middle of the road and there was a complete loss of control over the vehicle. Had there been another vehicle, object, or person in front of me, I would have likely collided with them (thankfully the road was empty) research has lead me to find that this is a known issue with Ford and the F150 series from years 2010 to approximately 2014. Fuse number 27 in the engine fuse box is undersized from the factory and melts due to the inability to handle the amperage. I found mine melted after today as well. Ford has "addressed" this issue with a tsb (Ford tsb-15-0137 see attached) which it charges customers for to replace the fuse and wiring for the fuse with a new, up sized fuse and wires. They do not cover this free of charge unless your truck is under warranty. As this is a glaring safety issue that numerous people have reported, I ask that the NHTSA investigate this and have Ford initiate a recall on the affected vehicles, and make the repair free of charge to customers. This issue is a manufacturing flaw and one that has the ability to cause loss of life and property due to failure to control the vehicle. Some forums where people have reported the same issue: www.fordraptorforum.com/F39/engine-cut-off-low-oil-pressure-warning-11894/index16.htmlwww.fordraptorforum.com/F39/Ford-raptor-fuel-pump-fuse-issue-45129/index37.html https://www.F150forum.com/F12/engine-shots-off-while-driving-402848/www.F150ecoboost.net/forum/31-F150-ecoboost-problems/26113-engine-randomly-died-while-driving.html
My truck downshifts without cause, sometimes to 1st gear, and on one occasion my wheels skidded (which was witnessed by my neighbor who was walking his dog and was startled by the skid). The speedometer goes to zero even while moving - I have video from my cell phone of this happening while going approximately 75 mph on the freeway. When this happens all other gauges go to dashes, including the mileage, mpg, etc. The transmission will slip into 2nd and 5th gears and will not go to any other gears. It sometimes remains in 3rd gear even at a dead stop. Turning the truck completely off sometimes "resets" things, but only temporarily. I have contacted a dealer about this and they looked up my VIN and told me there are no recalls for my truck year - even though the same types of things were occurring with 2011-12 F150's, and those are the subject of a recall. This is a safety issue: It happens without warning, sometimes on the freeway traveling at high speeds, sometimes while sitting at a stop light and it shifts to 3rd gear and hardly will get going. I called Ford customer service and explained everything and they said they would report to NHTSA but since it is out of warranty and there is no recall, I would most likely be responsible for the cost of repair. I pointed out a letter sent by NHTSA to Ford on January 18, 2018 addressing issues with my truck model and year, but that did not change anything in the representative's mind. I believe there needs to be consumer protection on this, both from a safety and financial aspect, by NHTSA. I have video of what happened on the freeway with the truck downshifting to 5th gear and remaining there, and when traffic slowed the truck downshifted to 2nd gear and would not shift to any other gear. I had to pull off the freeway with hazard lights flashing and turn off the truck and restart it to try to "reset" things.
