CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2011 Fusion builds off the 2010's reputation. That's not a good thing.

The first thing that jumps out is the ridiculous amount of power steering complaints. It grinds, it squeals, and it eventually just fails.

And if losing power steering isn’t enough for you, how about a sudden loss of engine power? That combination is enough to achieve clunker status.

The power steering assist fault warning came on and I lost power steering a few minutes later the advance traction control light came on. It is my understanding that there is a recall out on the power steering assist unit.

My husband was driving this vehicle two days ago and the power steering froze. Fortunately, he was able to steer it to safety because he is quite strong, however I would never have been able to manage this, and as such the incident presented a safety issue that could have been quite hazardous to us and to other drivers. I looked online and Ford does not have an active recall for the power steering unit, but instead posted a notice indicating "EPAS Steering Effort Campaign #15N01." I contacted the dealer, who told me that since the car is now out of warranty (as of May 2015, when we had no problems to have fixed) that they would not fix it for free but for approximately $2,500. I asked a Ford Chat representative for an email address and was told, "Thank you for your patience Jane. You are looking for an email to corporate? Ford would like to be able to better assist our customers quickly via Chat or Phone. For this reason, the Customer Relationship Center or corporate does not have a direct email address. I-€™ll be more than happy to help you today!" I will be copying this complaint to them in my next Chat to Ford. Additionally, the Ford Media Center posted the following: DEARBORN, Mich., May 27, 2015 -€" Ford is issuing two safety recalls in North America. Four minor accidents and no injuries are attributed to one of these conditions. Details are as follows: "Ford issues safety recall for certain 2011-2013 Ford Taurus and Flex vehicles, Lincoln MKS and MKT vehicles, for certain 2011-2012 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles, and for certain 2011 Mercury Milan vehicles in North America for potential issue with electric power steering" https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/news/2015/05/27/ford-issues-two-safety-recalls-in-north-america-.html.

My husband is the primary driver for our 2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid. We are second-hand owners of the vehicle and have had it since 2020. Earlier this month (Dec 2021) the power steering failed and it became difficult to control the car. My husband transports our youngest daughter to daycare daily and we live in Nebraska which means we deal with icy road conditions seasonally. This failure puts my husband and our daughter at risk on the roads. Per the vehicle history, there was a safety recall regarding power steering that was repaired at a dealership July 2011. This repair included reprogramming the power steering control module. Because the power steering assembly was not fully replaced at that time, this enacted an extended warranty that was good for 10 years OR 150,000 miles starting from the original warranty date - whichever came first. When we came into ownership of this vehicle, it was over 150,000 miles already. We did have a mulit-point inspection done prior to purchase in June 2020 and the steering assembly was not noted as being an issue or an upcoming issue. Now, with this recent failure, our local Ford dealership told us the internal gears were chipped, cracked and broken (rack & pinion), so the entire steering assembly had to be replaced. Since we are beyond the extended warranty on the original power steering recall AND since the power steering control module was reprogrammed initially, Ford says that they are not able to cover any costs for this failure. We feel that Ford should have gone further in their initial recall, asking that the steering assembly be replaced rather than just reprogrammed.

On 12/13/21, my son swerved out of an accident and hit a high curb which damaged the driver's side tire. Luckily the Air Bag did not discharge. Recall 21S12 Driver Air Bag Inflator Replacement was issued in March of 2021, yet I did not receive a letter, and my car still has not been repaired. Are you waiting for a fatality to occur before providing the dealers with the necessary supplies?

While leaving a parking lot, the power steering system on my wife's 2011 Ford Fusion with approximately 64,000 miles failed without warning. That failure resulted in the steering wheel freezing in position rendering the car uncontrollable. A warning statement appeared on the instrument panel indicating a failure in the power steering module had occurred. Towing was required. After speaking with the Ford Recall Center and performing additional research online we found that there had been a recall #15S18 for 2011 Ford Fusion with only a limited number of VIN numbers included. Our Fusion was not included. As the result we had no idea there was the possibility of a spontaneous failure of the steer system. Although our VIN was not included in the recall it is crystal clear that the safety hazard still exists, and our vehicle should have been included in the recall. Though our research we found that this failure is not a limited problem. This hazard is ongoing and is widespread. It also has caused unnecessary accidents and significant injuries. We were fortunate that the steering module failed on a parking lot as opposed to the highspeed highway that was going to be used to return to our home. We believe this issue deserves additional review and possibly further action by your Administration.

On october18,2021 our vehicle lost power steering. We had the vehicle towed to BobSight ford in lee's summit, mo. We heard there had been issues about power steering assist. Looked up recalls on NHTSA WEBSITE and found campaign # 15v340000. We contacted the dealership about the recall but they told us it wasn't a recall situation. We were charged $1845.97 for repairs. The vehicle was ready on October 26,2021. When there is over 393,625 vehicles potentially affected why would this not be an issue that is considered a recall. I feel that I was charged for repairs unjustly and that this dealer was negligent in their actions. Fortunately there was no crashes or injuries with this vehicle. I consider this a very dangerous situation that needs to be addressed and taken care of on all vehicles that this applies to. I feel I should be reimbursed for the charges. Thank you.

POWER STEERING ASSIST FAILURE. When this appears the car is very difficult to drive. My safety and the safety of others is at risk when this happens. Thank Goodness I was not going when this occurred otherwise I could have hit someone. The problem has not been inspected by the manufacturer as they can't even fix my air bag recall, No other warnings. this has occurred now about 4 times. shutting the car off and restarting it seems to reset the issue.
