clutch failure

Driving along minding my own business when the Mustang decided it didn't want to shift into 3rd from a neutral coast. Slowed down enough to try 2nd and it still wouldn't shift. Pulled over to the median and came to a complete stop, it went into 1st. Went to take off and it wouldn't shift out of 1st. Car died in the middle of one of the busiest roads in Louisville, KY. Luckily a passerby stopped to help me push it out of the road. I had it towed to the local Ford dealership but they couldn't get to it for 7-8 days. And I'm in a rental car so I had it towed to a local (well known in this area) transmission place. They just called me, clutch is shot. The guy is baffled. It doesn't even have 12,000 miles on it!!!
