This problem has been afraid to leave my driveway. It will start but won't idle. Checked the fuel pressure and it was low. Change the fuel pump relay a couple weeks ago and it ran find. Thought it was fixed. Then it let me down about 18 miles from home had to pay a $75.00 tow bill to get it home. Went out about 2 hours later and it started right up and idled fine. Ran fine for another week and a half. Then today (21 Dec 2010) it wouldn't idle again. It will fire up but cut right off. I swapped a couple of relays and still nothing. I waited about 1/2 hour, dreading another tow bill, then it fire up and ran fine the 8 miles home. I am thinking about putting in a new fuel pump tomorrow, but the pump, strainers and press regulator will cost about $175.00 at Autozone.
The crazy part is that once it starts to idle, it will run fine and doesn't cutoff or miss or anything. Once you cut it off, you never know when it will or will not start! I had a 1984 Lincoln T/C that I drove for 20 years that only broke down with a bad coil once. This Taurus has cost more in repairs in 4 years than the Lincoln did in 20! I am a Ford, Mercury and Lincoln guy, but no more Tauruses for me!
