My 2015 GMS Terrain SLE-2 engine failed last week with 109,000 miles, just past the warranty of course. I was told the engine ran out of oil yet there were no signs of leaks that the service department could find, nor any signs in my driveway. This caused the timing chain to fail and lifters broke. I have oil changed regularly at my local dealership and have all receipts. Come to find out there is no low oil pressure light installed in this model. I was told by the service department to replace the engine for $9900. The alternative was to scrap the car.
Current Blue Book value is $11,873 so replacing the engine was not worth the money. The dealership had NO explanation as to how it ran out of oil. So I purchased another car and scrapped the Terrain today. Now, after some investigating I have learned that I could have spoken further with the dealer and they would have helped IF I still had the car. Seems as though GM knows about this issue yet I was never informed. Thankfully it died in my driveway and not during commuting hours on the highway going 70 mph! I did file a safety complaint with the NHTSA.
