CarComplaints.com Notes: Haven't we all owned one of these things at some point? Despite being a popular first car for teenage drivers and, as a result, being beat up like no other, the late 90's Civic is a true endurance car. And it still gets better gas mileage than more modern cars.

All of a sudden the transmission only drives for about a minute then no more drive. Wait 5 min. and it works for another minute.

Civic ES 1.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 172,000 miles

The car stopped in the middle of day in summer while driving. There was not any issue of transmission or anything. It is painful. The cost of repair is very high. I cannot afford it.

Civic LX 1.6L I4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 70,000 miles

Started with check engine light on and will not shift properly. Error code P0730 (incorrect gear ratio). Dealer estimate is $2900 to replace the transmission, Called Honda support, but they refused to help.

After reading many comments on this forum, I guess it is not worth spending 3K, Will buy another car, but NEVER Honda again.

Civic EX

  • Manual transmission
  • 97,000 miles

I was driving home the other night and my car shuddered to a stop in the middle of an intersection in Brooklyn. I couldn't get the car to move and it felt like it kept slipping out of gear. I couldn't put it in neutral and then it got stuck in second gear. Luckily someone was with me to push the car to the side of the road while I held the clutch in. I had it towed to two different places and have gotten estimates of $1600-$2000 to take the transmission out and replace it. I thought maybe I had done something wrong until I read all these other complaints about everyone's Honda Civic transmissions crapping out on them. I do not want to pay this much money for a car that is not even worth that much more. I called Honda and they took note of my complaint but said they weren't going to do anything about it. I got a Honda because of their fuel efficiency and reliability but this is ridiculous.
