CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2011 Sonata has a seriously defective engine that seizes without warning. It was awarded the dubious honor of being the first CarTalk / CarComplaints Turd of the Week in late September 2015.
A class action lawsuit was filed in May 2015 against Hyundai that claims the 2.4L Sonata engine is defective. More info here.

Upon repairing a recall by the dealer to the steering in February 2017, the airbag light is on all the time and the vehicle has never been in an accident
Takata recall I have contacted two Hyundai dealers plus hertz sales and none say they replace/repair takata airbags in Hyundai Sonatas even though I received a postcard saying that I'm identified as a current owner of a vehicle with a takata manufactured "psan inflator".
Brought car in to empire Hyundai for air bag light and my recall paper. They told me that it was going to cost me $115 to check it out if it's not the clock spring. The recall paper says, I will not be charged regardless of the cause.

The contact owned a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. While driving 65 mph, the vehicle independently jerked to the right and clipped a semi truck. The contact's vehicle was pulled under the semi and dragged for 100 yards. Prior to the failure, the ESC and TPMS indicators illuminated. The contact also noticed an abnormal burning odor. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a salvage yard and deemed destroyed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. There were no injuries. The failure mileage was approximately 102,000.
Not sure if my car has the "takata recall" but it should due to the fact my airbag light came one day I get in my car to start my day and its been on every since.
I was notified that I have faulty airbags in my car and I should contact my dealership. When I called the dealership I was told they don't have parts and have no idea when they will get them. Faulty airbags is very serious and with winter approaching there is a greater chance for an accident. This is unacceptable. The website referenced in the recall letter, www.airbagrecall.com, said to contact this website if the issue was not addressed
Takata recall received notice of recall; recommended service location (dave marston motors, minocqua Wisconsin usa) told me that parts were unavailable at this time and that I should register to be contacted when parts became available. Vehicle is stationary at this moment.
While driving my car on Saturday I came to a stop and then notice after hitting my brakes my airbag light came on. This can be scary that I don't know if my airbags are going to come out anytime while I'm driving or hitting my brakes for no reason.
My airbag light came on with no reason. I did not hit my car, nor got into any accident at all. I took to dealership who charged me $165 for diagnostics and advised that my front passenger seat airbag module / sensor is bad and will cost $980 if I wanted to get it fixed. I have received recall notice from tk holding that states my car is part of the airbag fix / recall but dealer refuses to fix without almost thousand dollar.
Takata recall. I recently received mail regarding possible recall of the airbag on my driver's side. I checked the site and it stated there are no active recalls for my vehicle hiwever, I have noticed for a couple weeks that the airbag light on my dashboard has been on. How do I handle this?
While driving, I noticed a red light flickering on and off on my dashboard. I noticed that it was the driver side air bag indicator light. It now stays on constantly, whether in motion or not. Not sure what the issue is, as my airbag has never been deployed. I am afraid of it deploying while driving, but was told that it would not from one of the Hyundai dealer service reps. It will cost $112 just for a diagnosis of the problem.
I am having issues with my airbag light also my steering column is clicking, the last time there work on my vehicle they disconnect my cruise control and my bluetooth, will not use West broad Hyundai anymore.
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the air bag warning indicator was constantly illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer (nielsen Hyundai, 4411 E. Michigan blvd, Michigan city, in 46360) where it was diagnosed that the driver side air bag needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Due to the repair cost, the vehicle would not be repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was currently waiting on a call back. The VIN was invalid. The failure mileage was approximately 87,000.
Air bag inflator light stays on continuously after starting vehicle, whether at idle or in motion. Vehicle has not been in any type of accident. No bags have been deployed
Airbag light stays on while driving. Intermittently goes off and comes back on. No accidents to vehicle. No abuse to vehicle. Car was driven several times the day it started staying on. Worked fine until the last time it was driven that day. Car was parked in my carport. Drove out of driveway and light was on. Stopped at a drive thru. Light went off but came right back on. Remained on for remainder of drive down highway.
