CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2011 Sonata has a seriously defective engine that seizes without warning. It was awarded the dubious honor of being the first CarTalk / CarComplaints Turd of the Week in late September 2015.
A class action lawsuit was filed in May 2015 against Hyundai that claims the 2.4L Sonata engine is defective. More info here.

About These NHTSA Complaints:
This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
My fuel sending unit has failed. My "miles to empty" meter is never accurate or steady. It's always moving sporadically. I have to constantly keep my tank fill in fear of not knowing how much gas is actually in my car. Also, my airbag light is on. It just randomly came on when I was driving. I'm not sure if this has anything to do my seat belt or a faulty sensor. Both of these issues both happen when the vehicle is or isn't in motion.
Air bag light comes on without car being in any type of accident. Dealer wants to replace the entire control module. When researching this online, a tremendous amount of Hyundai owners are having the same issue.
Upon starting the car, the airbag instrument light illuminated and will not turn off. Car has 66,000 miles and I'm worried the airbag will not work as designed.
The same bulbs go out in my tailight and headlight 3X a year and the dealership keeps telling me it's not electrical it's just bulbs don't always lay long. My SRS light pops
The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact heard an abnormal noise progressing from the area of the engine. The dealer (gurley leep Hyundai, 5302 grape rd, mishawaka, in 46545, (574) 258-7700) was notified of the failure and diagnosed that the engine assembly needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact experienced the failure related to the unknown manufacturer's engine recall, but the dealer refused to provide a solution because the vehicle was excluded. The vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign numbers: 16V340000 (air bags), 15V759000 (service brakes, hydraulic), and 16V190000 (steering). The approximate failure mileage was 105. 2011 Sonata, car burns oil to black immediately. Took car in on warranty service for front knocking noise that appeared to generate from steering wheel. Replaced left transaxle, still noise took it back they replaced right transaxle. The issues with electrical still exist they've replaced the left side buttons on steering wheel even though I complained none worked correctly. Now cruise control is nonexistent. The airbag light came on at 73000 miles. Seat doesn't go all the way down. There is a definitive rattle originating from the engine and at times the rear end seems to have drag and shake. They inspected car for recall and of course they said my vehicle is unaffected but who knows how thorough their inspection actually is. I mean they represent Hyundai so why would they want to say it was bad prior to any breakdown. Right. I feel like this severe of an issue should have an independent inspection.
Takata recall. The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. While the contact was approaching a yellow traffic light, the preceding vehicle accelerated and then made a sudden stop. As a result, the contact rear ended the other vehicle while driving 55 mph. None of the air bags deployed. The contact's head struck the steering wheel upon impact. The contact sustained pain to the knees, elbows, and minor bruising. Medical attention was required. A police report was filed. The insurance company repaired the collision damages, but there was no investigation as to why the air bags failed to deploy. Months later, the air bag indicator illuminated and, a few days later, the contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 17V152000 (seat belts). The dealer was to schedule an appointment and indicated that the contact would need to have a diagnosis prior to the recall repair. The manufacturer was later notified of the crash and recently stated that the notice was received after the crash; therefore, the contact was waiting to determine if the manufacturer would assist. The failure mileage was not available. Parts distribution disconnect.
