I just bought a 1994 Cherokee Sport 4x4 and it stalls when idling or driving down the freeway, basically whenever it decides too. It was disclosed when i bought it that it had this problem (short of actually stalling when it was moving. I was told it did this only when it was idling). The jeep is in excellent shape inside and out (no dings, interior extremely well kept, highly detailed...etc). and i thought it was a deal...and still do. The previous owners kept every single receipt and service record for the services dating back to day one. The previous owners have replaced a slew of sensors (they were mentioned but i forgot) and it did not fix the problem. The guy before me took it to 2 different auto shops and they couldn't figure it out. He finally took it into a dealership and they couldn't find a problem either (not surprising, everyone seems to say the same thing).
I found out today just how bad the stalling can get. The seller told me it could happen as soon as i leave, or a year from now. i found out a week to the day from when i bought it how bad it can be. After it stalled about 7 times in a 1 hour time frame i noticed i could recreate it by going over something bumpy i.e. speed bumps, pot holes in roads/freeways. However, it can do it at a stop light just as easily....i cannot recreate this. Sometimes its as easy as putting it in park and restarting it. There was one time that i had to wait about 5 minutes with the hazards on to get it to turn over again. This could possibly be because i didn't realize it had stalled and kept my foot on the gas. I may have unintentionally flooded it.
Anyhow, i've searched the internet trying to find a solution. Jeep has to know what it is at this point. Its not an isolated incident as i see it can happen to not only my year but other years and even the Grand Cherokee with different engine sizes. I haven't dug deep enough to see if it happens to other models.
