While taking out a stroller and putting it on side, parking pawl jumped from park to reverse, making vehicle to crash into a tree. Consumer had contacted manufacturer, and they said they will send a technician to dealer area to inspect vehicle. The gear shift would stick due to a design flaw.
I left the vehicle idling in park in my driveway. I walked across the road to get my mail. When I got back into my vehicle, it started backing up. I slammed on the brakes to try to stop it. It went backwards across the road, down an incline, and stopped when it ran into my neighbor's fence.
I left car idling in park, went in house and about five minutes later I looked out the window and saw the car backing out of driveway and it crashed into a tree. This was on level ground. I contacted local dealer and they said that it must have been my fault. This car ultimately went back to dealer on the lemon law in August of 99. The dials went off when I was traveling, the air went off, the locks wouldn't work nor the air conditioning. This would last a few minutes and then come back on. It went back to the dealer about ten times and for more than thirty days. I tried to have them take back the car but they refused so I went the lemon law route. I do not know where the car is now. I will forward to you in another email what I wrote into your regional office on Friday night.
Having backed my car out of the garage, I realized I had left something in the house that I needed. I put the car in park, it was idling when I got out of the car. Before entering my house I glanced over my shoulder and saw my Jeep rolling back down the driveway to eventually crash into a tree on my property.

Car was pulled into the garage and placed in park with the engine still running. I exited the car and left the driver's side door open. At this point the car was idling and was not moving. In approximately 5-10 seconds the car started moving rapidly backwards and proceeded out of the garage, down the driveway, across the grass and was stopped by a 10ft tall row of shrubs and a chainlink fence. As the car proceeded out of the garage the open door slammed into the garage, bending it back and causing siginificant damage. Luckily, my 5 and 3 year old were securely buckled into their car seats and were not injured in the accident. The incident was reported to Chrysler. They sent out and inspector who reported no mechanical errors with the vehicle and the accident was due to negligence on my part.

Vehicle shifted from park into reverse on two different occassions. The second time I was teaching my niece to drive. We were sitting in the vehicle when it shifted from park into reverse. No damage that time.
