This is generally caused, from what I understand, a clogged drain tube. I checked the tube as far as I could and did not find a clog. The clog is either behind the dash or maybe on the bottom where the tube comes out. I haven't found where it comes out on the bottom of the car yet. The tube is corrugated and that makes it harder to try and clear out the clog. Any time it rains, some amount of water comes in around the sunroof and will come out from the headliner in any place it happens to feel like coming out. Most typically through the dome light or over the dash but sometimes onto the driver. I have a had a few other cars with sunroofs in the past and they have all been fine. This vehicle, in general, is a hot piece of garbage. Never buy one. Oh and the cd player ate a cd and won't work anymore.

I am a Michigan resident who purchased a 2009 Jeep Patriot in 2012. My sunroof and dome lights have been leaking/pouring water into my car, despite paying to have the Jeep dealers "blow out" the now "too corroded tubes" more than 4-5 times in the past three years. I'm tired of dealing with the subsequent mold and dangerous electrical issues associated with the leaks; not to mention the awful smell and unsightly stains. I almost zapped my hand when trying to wipe of the radio, in the midst of a leak, right before the radio shorted out.

This is absolute madness that Jeep owners are continually dealing with these issues, even with the newer models. Jeep's reputation is certainly slipping these days. I'm very interested in getting involved in whatever class action suit is available, by the way. So I would love any and all info from anyone who has gotten involved with a suit and/or has had Chrysler/Jeep repair their sunroofs/dome-lights, free of charge, with definitive results.

SUNROOF HAS BEEN LEAKING FROM MAP LIGHT SINCE PURCHASED IN 2009. DEALER CLEANED SUNROOF DRAIN LINE ONCE BUT CLAIMED IT WAS NOT A WARRANTY ITEM. RECENT LEAKS HAVE GOTTEN WORSE, DRAINS INTO DASHBOARD. CAR RADIO STOPPED WORKING DUE TO WATER DAMAGE. CALLED DEALER AND EXPLAINED PROBLEM. DEALER SAID IT WOULD TAKE SEVERAL DAYS TO DIAGNOSE PROBLEM AND WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. SUNROOF DRAIN LINE NOT USER ACCESSIBLE

This is the 3rd time taking it in. Last time they had to replace the stereo due to water damage. They blamed it on the windshield, which we had checked (for leaks) & then replaced with no luck. Now they say that the drain tube can not drain quick enough, why is this my problem, why don't they only sell them in the desert !!!!! 😡

We have a 2009 JEEP Patriot and HATE IT.

Sun roof leaks and we have to get it cleaned out every 6 months. We have taken it to the dealer only once regarding this issue and they could care less. They say they have never seen anything like this before. REALLY YOU'RE KIDDING RIGHT.

We live in an area that almost every home has a Jeep product and they have never seen the Patriot leak. I have now since taken the Jeep to my mechanic and they clean the tubes out twice a year so we do not get any leakage.

HATE THIS JEEP. So ready for something new.

This is very dangerous! The sunroof leaks water into the dome lights when it rains and all over the electrical system. It's not minor. The harder the rainfall the more of a leak. So extremely disappointed in Jeep....will not support this cheap brand any further!!

I live in Nevada, so it doesn't rain a ridiculous amount here. However, when it does it rains hard. Last night for example, I was driving home from dinner and rain started pouring out of the dome lights. This is the second time this has happened in the last 5 months. Luckily I keep a hand towel under my seat and could stop the rain before it did significant damage to my dash. Unfortunately, I didn't stop the water in time before the water could reach the stereo and short it out for the rest of the night. I've done some online research on how to fix the issue and have come up with next to nothing. Any ideas or tips?

leaking sunroof leaking sunroof leaking sunroof

I purchased a 2009 Jeep Patriot in July of 2013 with 27,000 miles. From the first hard rainfall it leaked. At first I attributed it to not closing the sunroof properly. It took me several months, due to the lack of sufficient rainfall, to realize it was leaking. Of course, by that time the warranty had expired.

The water travels inside my roof to the lowest point, my dome lights, and then out onto my dash and radio. Due to water damage my radio no longer picks up AM/FM stations, only SAT. It also runs out of the screw holes on the sides of the windshield. I have used someone else's pictures to show exactly where mine is leaking.

Obviously this is an ongoing problem that many are having. I recently took it to a garage and paid $224.00 to have the drainage lines unstopped. For approximately one week it did not leak. However, when I got in my vehicle this morning it was leaking out of the dome lights AGAIN!! I have contacted a lawyer who has filed a class-action lawsuit regarding these leaks. I hope something will be done by Chrysler to fix this problem which has the capability of causing a lot of damage to the electrical system in my vehicle, not to mention other problems such as mold, odor, standing water, rust, damage to the roof lining, etc....

This is the last time I am writing here. The problem has not changed. I'll not bore you much more. The sunroof on the 2009 Jeep Patriot leaks with any moisture hitting the roof. No fixing it.

My husband complained to the service manager on the last oil change. They scheduled a day to look at it, and canceled the day before. The dealership/service department have not contacted to reschedule. I think they realize it is unfixable. However, I have received 3 different offers in the mail stating they NEED Jeep Patriot trade-ins! They want to sell me another car.

I asked the service manager, Wayne to get behind me and stand for the customer several months back. He has to make a living too, I guess. He has been no help.

Please don't buy a Jeep. Besides the leak, the car has little noise insulation from the undercarriage. It is a loud ride.

The leak has continued. There have been multiple occasions which I did not mention due to lack of documentation. This time, I requested the dealership to look at the problem. Tate Branch Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep of Hobbs, NM is the dealership where I purchased the car. They have done all oil changes and free washes (which took up to 2.5 hours to complete--I know why now! They were drying out my car. I finally quit asking them to wash it due to the excessive wait time.) The service manager, Wayne (the one with the earring), stated it would be a month before they could get to it. Parts would then have to be ordered if needed and there would be a wait on those before installation.

Ok. I waited for the appointed day, with the millage running out on the 36,000 warranty. By the time they were able to assess the problem, I had done more internet research. When they told me it was due to my lack of cleaning the drain tubes, I knew it was the design and manufacture process causing the trouble. Not me. However, not wanting to come off as unreasonable, I asked for the assembly to be replaced before the warranty ran out. Parts were ordered and the work was done on warranty, although the car did have more than the 36,000 miles. I understood the whole sunroof system was replaced on that day. I left the car at 8am and did not pick it up until around 4:30 that day. I cannot give you the date, but it was mid to late June of 2012.

We've had this Jeep for almost 3 years but since day one it has had the leaking sunroof.. and I'm not talking about a small leak, I'm talking about EVERY TIME it rains, it's like a waterfall from the dome light... It's caused us to almost wreck twice. It's ridiculous that there isn't a recall on this.. when Jeep KNOWS it's an issue.

The sunroof leaks. I take it to the dealer, they say they can 'fix' it. They blow out the drain lines. That does not fix it, within a few months it is blocked/kinked again. Why does the water drip through the window seal anyway? Seems that is what needs fixing. I have had to replace the radio-$550.00-and every time they blow out the drain lines, it is $35.00. This is my 5th and LAST Jeep product. It is parked in a garage all day at work and all night at home. What would the problem be like if I parked it under trees? Now the map lights don't work from the water damage, and yes, I know, it is past warranty-In the beginning, you think you left it open a crack, or it is cold and something is frozen, and then the dealer says they can 'fix' the problem. And now, finally, I am realizing this is a design flaw-I Googled it, and I am among thousands of people with this problem. Chrysler needs to fix this issue.

My sunroof leaks to the point that now my radio has shorted out. I get random malfunction lights on my dash and my once pristine, white roof liner is stained with water spots. The carpet is almost always wet as well. When I called Jeep about the problem I was told that the drains need to be blown out and it would cost anywhere from $100-$150 just to have that done. But now I'm having issues with my radio and the malfunction lights. The malfunction indicator light goes on and off depending upon whether it has recently rained or not. My gas cap light goes on and off at random times. And now my radio does not work at all. I wonder how much they're going to charge me to fix those things? From everything I can see and read, this is most clearly a manufacturer's defect and should be taken care of by the manufacturer. Jeep may think this is nothing more than a maintenance problem but it is clearly a design flaw. A simple screen at the head of each drain would surely eliminate the problem. And what happens when that leak shorts out my electrical system and I'm going 70 mph down the interstate? I'll tell you what happens. It becomes a life or death situation and I can assure you they will have to own up to this at that point!! As a client services manager for a multistate state law firm, I can promise you that if Jeep does not begin to stand up to this problem, I will pursue legal action on a large scale. I owned a Chevy Trailblazer for 11 years. It had 222,000 miles on it when I sold it last year and it never had one leak in the sunroof!

I really like to know why Jeep refuses to take responsibility for the fact that they have a design flaw and not only in the Patriot but also in the Commander and other Jeep products.

Took the Patriot in a couple of times but dealer couldn't find any issue. The third time I took it in, the dealer said that the drainage tubes were clogged up and they blew the debris out. Picked it up then took it immediately to the car wash across the street and water gushed in. Went right back to the dealer and they have some lame excuse that the car wash water is put out with so much pressure that water will come in.
