I own a 2008 Jeep Wrangler that has been experiencing the 'death wobble' more frequently. The cause for concern first happened (2) years ago after hitting a pothole on the highway. I took it in for inspection and maintenance. The mechanic told me it was a loose steering stabilizer bar.

About a year or so after the repair, my Wrangler has been experiencing the 'death wobble' more frequently. It seems to happen when I'm driving on the interstate and hit some significant bump or pothole. I have to slow down to roughly 40 MPH for the violent shaking to stop. Then, I can accelerate back to normal speed. It can be real dangerous when other people are close behind me and I'm forced to apply the brakes to drop my speed by roughly 30 MPH. I don't have the money to keep taking the Wrangler in for more repairs, especially one that seems to happen periodically. Thoughts?

I love my Jeep Wrangler. There, got that out of the way. I do experience death wobble though. For the most part it is fine but if I am going just under 40 and hit a bump in the road (usually specific stretch of road) it starts the dw. So I am driving along and nervous as hell everyday (on my way to work and home) that I'm not going to be able to stop it from occurring. Anyways I have watched a bunch of Youtube videos about it too had alignments done etc be still get it. I think I will end up trading it in for another wrangler. I've always had Wranglers my whole life I never even heard of dw then bam, hit me like a ton of bricks and I thought I was gonna die. Long story short I didn't die. Anyway rant over.

I can not believe that these Jeep's are not being recalled. I am not able to travel highways because if I go over 70 KM an hour the wobble is so bad that my wheels start locking and I have to pull over to stop the shaking. Lucky that I have not been hit and killed by now. This has happened to me 4 times already and I had the stabilizer bar changed and keep getting told that its fine. It's not.

People should stop being these JEEP's until they do something about it.

I was in the process of braking smoothly on an interstate ramp and when slowing to about 45-50 mph the steering wheel started shaking so hard that it felt the entire front end was bumping and was extremely hard to control. I bought this vehicle for my teenager and am very concerned about this issue. It's at the dealer now. I had never heard of this problem. Because of the difficultly in controlling the vehicle when this is happening until you nearly slow to a stop, it seems very dangerous to me.

Used to have a death wobble...it would come and go. The Jeep would shudder 6 inches either way. The dealership changed the damper 3 or 4 times. Finally put and aftermarket one on. Did not fix the problem. I switched to fun country tires. Have had no problems for the last year.

Left for work this morning and while driving down the road the Jeep started shaking so much as if it was just fall apart. It had happened slightly in the past after going over a bump but this was UNBELIEVABLY VIOLENT SHAKING, and Thank God there were no other vehicles on the road because I felt helpless. I slowed down and while trying to maintain control of the vehicle, which was difficult. When the (from what I am learning now is called) "death wobble" stopped, I just turned around and went home petrified to drive it. Happened over an hour and a half ago and my nerves are still shot. Will try some of the suggested troubleshooting and fixes I suppose. Kind of disappointed though that this is such a common occurrence yet from what I have found out so far Chrysler could care less. :(

I experience the Jeep "death wobble" on this vehicle. It has gotten worse with time. We've had several things repaired or replaced. No help. I don't want to just start replacing parts hoping to find the right fix.

After owning my Jeep with no issues, it suddenly developed the 'death wobble'. I have spent over $1500 in repairs. Two steering stabilizers, alignments, replaced tire rods, etc with no full solution. It has improved some but the wobble still exists.

I purchased this piece of sh*t about 8 months ago and am so ready to get out of it. I bought it because my mother wanted a Jeep and now I am sorry I did. It is a Jeep Wrangler 2008 with only 72k miles. The problems begun two days after I picked it up at the dealer. First a lower and upper drive shaft had to be replaced, then the whole engine had to be replaced. Then it flooded because the window gaskets were sh*tty, and shortly after the tops had to be sealed bc the water leaked into the honeycomb.

I have always driven European cars; Mercedes, BMW, Porsche and have never experienced anything like what they are calling The Death Wobble. And rightly named because I was very fortunate to have survived this horrible experience. As I traveled down a very busy highway at 65mph the Jeep started to tremble violently. I thought I had a broken front axle and had a semi truck right behind me. Fortunately I was traveling in the high speed lane and immediately put on my left blinker and rolled into the side shoulder or Emergency lane. After a long pause to calm my heart I got out and inspected the bottom of the Jeep. After a walk around I got back in the car and drove off. I tried to duplicate the problem on way home and it did not occur at any speed since.

So as soon as I was able I took it in to the dealer (Planet Dodge) where they did the prior work of replacing the drive shafts. After explaining my symptoms to the adviser, she calmly stated that it is a common problem called The Death Wobble. So here I am deciding to fix it or just sell the pos. I wanted to give American made a try but I am once again sorry I did. I hope no one has to die in order to file a class action suit. This is just a terrible accident waiting to happen.

Sh*t was scary as hell. I was just driving down a paved residential road on a slight decline about 40 mph and it started wobbling and shaking the entire car. I felt like I was going to lose control and couldn't swerve over since there was traffic. I applied the brakes lightly, but not too much since there were other vehicles behind me that I didn't want to slam into me from behind if I suddenly braked too hard. Even while applying brakes, the Jeep was still wobbling violently. VIOLENTLY! seriously thought I was going to cause a wreck.

Finally the Jeep stopped wobbling where I pulled over and checked if my tires were lose or anything. Everything was fine on the outside. When I came home I wanted to see if anyone else had this issue and turns out it even has a name called the "Death Wobble". This is some bull sh*t. My Jeep is a 2008, with 40,000 mile. This Jeep is rarely used. This is unacceptable.

There should be a recall on the trac bar. Replacing it with one from the dealer is no good. You get the same problem later. I got mine online from Kevin's Offroad. It is bigger and beefier than the factory one.

Well, I got my tires balanced and that seemed to work for awhile, but coming back from MA. to NC the death wobble occurred several times, once at 70 mph. The problem seems to come and go. I noticed it seems to happen when the vehicle is cold. Going over bridges and crappy highways seem to exacerbate the problem.

Jeep should be shot not having a service fix for this. I am shooting in the dark for a fix, who has money to just pour into their car. I was driving down the highway at 60 mph, hit a bump and the wheels liked to come off the car. In the passing lane I94, had to slow to 20mph untill shaking stopped. Where is the government to protect this RECALL?

First of three attempted fixes at 49,500 for death wobble was replacing the steering stabilizer. Since then I've had the alignment done twice and the stabilizer replaced two more times. Death wobble is worse than ever. All components are within jeep specifications. Dealer is only suggesting a trial and error approach. No single component can be identified as causing the increasingly dangerous wobble.

Second of three attempted fixes at 51,000 for death wobble was replacing the steering stabilizer and doing alignment. This fixed it for two months. Then, the death wobble returned worse than before. Alignment was checked, steering stabilizer replaced again. Death wobble worse than ever... All components are within Jeep specifications. Dealer is only suggesting a trial and error approach. No single component can be identified as causing the increasingly dangerous wobble.

Jeep wrangler death wobble is clearly a Jeep design defect. All parts listed in the Jeep service advisory bulletin are within specification and not out of tolerance. Tires, wheels, steering stabilizer, alignment have all been checked and adjusted or replaced. Jeep service cannot identify what needs to be fixed. At 53000 miles the entire front end steering components should not have to be replaced part by part to fix an issue which is unfortunately common to these models. Help!
