Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 3.6L V6

Had trouble with my 2012 4 dr Rubicon stalling. It started in early 2019. Usually shift from park to reverse and the car would sometimes stall. It was throwing no codes and no check engine light. Took it to my local Jeep dealer and they could find nothing wrong. They thought is was bad gas from winter driving and suggested higher quality gas and a dewatering agent. Car stalled within days of being at the dealer. Problem continued all summer. In October 2019 the car stalled while driving at 30 mph! It would not restart initially but after about 10 minutes it restarted and drove normally. Took it to my local car repair shop (Next Auto in Highlands Ranch CO) and the owner Chris said it was most likely the crankshaft position sensor as it had gone out on his wife's Dodge vehicle. Crankshaft position sensor replaced for $118 and the car has not stalled for the last 3 months. Problem looks fixed.

I have taken my 2012 Jeep Wangler to the dealer twice now once about 6 months ago & just last week. It has been stalling on me while I am sitting idle at a red light or in a drive thru. At first it wasn't happening much and now it is doing it several times a day but not everyday. So far I am able to restart the engine however now it appears the automatic isn't getting into gear and is confused- drive after putting in park to start it.

The dealer can not get any error codes either time and has driven it for a day to see if it will happen to them- nothing but just wasted gas and time.

I have read MANY others who are having the SAME problem and the solutions vary so much- I don't want to put in a lot of money like others have just to find out the problem still happens after they have replaced all those parts. I can't believe that there is NO RECALL on this after reading some many other are having the same issue! My fear is that is start stalling while I am driving just like I read has happened to others... Any suggestions for this lady?

Wrangler Unlimited 3.6L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 75,000 miles

My car is a 2012 Jeep Unlimited Sahara, non-modified.

The problem symptoms are: random lack of power, engine stalls frequently.

Issues started at ca. 75k miles suddenly experiencing temporary lack of power which also feels like transmission (automatic) is not shifting. It got worse when the engine stalled for the first time.

At first all this happened occasionally, now more often and the engine stalls frequently when driving. No warning lights, no codes, no other known technical issues. After we faced a very dangerous situation in traffic, and were lucky no one was harmed and no damage occurred, the Jeep was parked for good.

After having searched the internet, I summarize as follows:

1. This is a apparently a common Jeep problem, and most likely anyone might encounter this at one point in time. 2. Jeep dealers do not have the knowledge and expertise to resolve the issue nor able to advice the customer what to do. 3. There seems no recall in place nor does Jeep acknowledge any engineering or manufacturing error. 4. This is a very dangerous problem that makes the Jeep a safety issue. It is not safe to drive at all, not for the owner/driver and not for others. 5. The replacement of a crankshaft sensor is often mentioned as a way to fix it. 6. It is unclear if the root cause has been found and a fix is confirmed as a resolution to this problem.

I cannot believe that Jeep would sit on this known problem, while a severe accident is just a matter of time.

Wrangler Sport 3.6L V6 Pentastar

I am the third owner of 2dr Jeep Wrangler Sport for about 4mos now. For the second time in the last 2 weeks, my jeep would stall on accelerating on a stopped right turn. Restarting the Jeep right away worked but on the second attempt I caused a dangerous situation because of no shoulder to pull over to. The first time it happened, I wasn't sure if it was something I did but the second time I know I did nothing wrong.

I have not had it checked out with the dealer yet but after reading other, very similar issues, it appears that Jeep has not diagnosed this problem or issued a recall.

Wrangler Limited 302

  • Automatic transmission
  • 57,000 miles

It died in the middle of rush hour traffic. Cars going 70+ miles an hour all around me. It was fixed and still lurches forward all the time like it wants to die and stalls out occasionally. The starter gets stuck in the turning position and burns out the starter when you are trying to start the jeep. You have to wait for it to cool down (yet the temp gauge never shows it overheated). Then you can try to start it.This is extremely dangerous !!! I thought I was going to get hit that day several times before the Highway Patrol showed up and got me off the side of the road.

Wrangler JK 3.6L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 81,000 miles

While parked at a red light or stop sign, etc. Engine will stall, no check engine light, no codes stored. Jeep has been to three different dealerships having same result, service has NO IDEA what is wrong. Tachometer just drops to zero. Starts right back up no problem. This is a major safety issue. Considering legal action. Jeep is still under warranty and has been in shop longer then in our own driveway.

Started in December 2015. Took it to dealership where I bought it for a hard jerking. They reflashed computer. Week later it shut off on highway, after 15min it started up. Ran fine for a month and it shut off again..no warning just shuts off on highway again. AGAIN 15min sitting, starts up. I did have a inner code P016c show up on dash.

March a new dealer switched computer out but i was still getting a hard downshift when I was driving or going up inclines gradually got worse but stalling stopped and a few different dealers told me it was normal. Changed transmission fluid (it was fine) Speed up to December stalled again and again po16c code new computer again..two weeks later stalled again going into work and going home ...I am up to 7 times this Jeep has randomly shut off on the highway (and a few times no breakdown lanes) dealership found no code this time and had it for a week. Told me to take it home drive it until it stalls and come back they will hook up a monitoring device and drive it again until it stalls..

Chrysler STAR team wants to come out but dealership says no because no codes are showing but I noticed in paperwork they reflashed computer IF it was running so well as they claimed why reflash it??? I have a running bill of $230 at dealership and a $448 rental bill. not to mention lost wages and time for a vehicle i/I still pay on.

Update from Jan 24, 2017: well after this post it has stalled again but i have to say Chrysler team and dealer have been very helpful and willing to work with me on this unresolved issue. I was also credited most of my rental back to me too. STAR team is now looking into it because the code is clearing itself. They are looking at possible wire

Update from Mar 24, 2017: so far so good my jeep is running pretty good (knock on wood) STAR and Keene decided to change the crankshaft position sensor. My oil pump or sensor for that may need to be replaced because after crank shaft sensor was changed the light came on but was cleared and hasnt been back on. i am grateful for Chad at Chrysler and Keene great group of people to deal with.

Wrangler Rubicon 3.6L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 95,000 miles

Car was stalling. while still under powertrain warranty. Dealer diagnosed it was a power train control module. PT warranty did not cover the PTM... Kinda funny the Pt Control module was not covered under PT warranty.. This did not correct stalling. The stalling is getting worse may now stall at a red light 3 times in a day...My guess is it may be a Tipm problem from my reading on the web.. Dealer is yet to come to this conclusion. If my wife, or children are injured do to this issue I will be seeking damages, in a big way.

Update from Feb 3, 2017: Dealer still not able to diagnose this problem. New PCM, multiple reflash. reground PCM. jeep stalled on I75 and almost caused an accident. Would not restart for 5 min. NO chk engine light.
