I left my house to go to the grocery store, which is about 18 minutes away. Go in, get a couple things, back out within 5 minutes. Get in Jeep, drive a couple miles to the ramp to get on highway, while accelerating to get on highway, jeep dies, check engine light on. Luckily, i'm on the ramp so not interfering with highway traffic. I called roadside assist. Meanwhile, kept trying to start jeep. After about 10 minutes, she started right up like nothing happened. I went on my way and cancelled roadside assist help. made it home, no problem.

Next day, crossing fingers to make it to work which is 40 minutes, all highway. Made it to work, no problem. Leave work drive about 20 minutes, go get haircut. leave, driving for about 10 minutes, (now on highway) in left lane as that's my exit lane to next highway, i start to merge to middle lane to pass a slow poke, jeep dies while merging into middle lane, luckily, i was able to coast off to right shoulder without incident, but it was close! No check engine light this time until i turn jeep off, then try to start again. I decided to just wait a few minutes to see if she'd start back up. After 10 minutes (timed), she started back up ( no check engine light) and i went on my way and made it home no problem.

Next day, make it to work again, no problem. I work for a Honda dealership and a used car tech is currently working on my jeep trying to figure out. I mentioned this forum and the crankshaft sensor being replaced. We are going to try that. Check engine light currently not on and he ran a code test, and no codes returned.

Will update

This is my 2nd jeep wrangler. My first i had for 11.5 years 01 wrangler 5pd manual. Only problems with that jeep, starter went out at probably 175k miles (easy fix). Then she over heated and burned up on side of highway, was tragic, but still love my jeeps. New Jeep, has had 2 O2 sensors replaced, rear window leaks (don't they all), both doors seals leak, had replaced less than 6 months ago, still leak, rain water builds up. very annoying, but not life threatening. Still wouldn't trade it for anything else, but i'd like to moving on the highway.

I have had this problem for several weeks. I have had it in the shop and checked. The stalling has reproduced itself BUT there is no code. Because there is no code, it apparently can't be fixed by the dealer. Do I need an accident before it an be fixed? It would appear to be the TIPM per research but a code will not appear because the problem does not register on the car's computer. How can I get JEEP/Chrysler to approve a fix?

Wrangler JK Sport 3.6L V6

  • Manual transmission
  • 62,448 miles

Just set up this profile to also add to this thread. I have a 2013 JK Sport, very well looked after and dealership service every 10 km. Two weeks ago I topped 100km and the 5 year warranty expired, and as if by magic, the first significant problem arises....

Last week I experienced a jolt before what felt like losing all power (although the engine did not stall immediately, only until revs had dropped too low to sustain itself, and no other systems dependent on power seemed to die), so I ruled out a battery issue. After 5-10 minutes of turning over it decided to start up again.

Did the right thing any reasonable man would do and stuck my head in the sand, crossed fingers, and hoped for the best.

This evening driving home from work in the outside line, after shifting down a gear, yep it dies. I was able to maintain some revs whilst cycling down through the gears and rolling into the hard shoulder and engine cuts out completely. After 10 minutes or so of trying to find the number for roadside assistance, I got it started again.

Knowing that the Jeep/Chrysler dealership here in Dubai can be an expensive exercise in wasting time, I'll definitely be trying to change the crank position sensor myself before taking it into the garage. I'll get it done this weekend and will post an update as to whether it solves the problem...

For now I think it will be the Metro or an Uber to work.... I don't fancy it happening again at 100-120km ph!

In some ways it's reassuring that I'm not the only one with what could be a very dangerous issue. I will however be reevaluating my future as a Jeep owner.

Update from Nov 11, 2018: So far so good since changing the Crankshaft Position Sensor.. I’ve driven around 15km since changing the sensor and no issues at high revs or when changing down through the gears.

If you have this problem, do this fix before taking it into the stealership!

I only created this profile to thank Neal for his solution to this matter. Have (had?) the same issues everybody else described. I went down to O'Reillys, handed them $17 and had the crankshaft position sensor on within 5 minutes. Simple. I'll report back in the next few months to update everybody on whether the issue has been resolved or not.

This has been gradually getting worse over time. It started stuttering between 1k-2k rpms and came very close to completely stalling out. I took it to Darcars (a place I refuse to return to due to the complete lack of customer service they provide). They changed my oil because I have such low mileage over the last 5 years I had only had the oil changed twice and couldn't recall the last time.

They said the car was fixed and had no explanation for the stuttering and said it wasn't real basically. About a month ago the Jeep died as I was entering the metro parking lot. Wouldn't start again for 10-20 minutes and after being honked at for a while somebody helped me push it aside. Anyway, it started again and I bought a code reader and there are no codes.

It's been about a month and it died again today while leaving the metro. I got my wife to come get me. About an hour later I went back to the metro and it started up and ran like a top again. Again, no codes at all. Will try to replace the "crankshaft" sensor tomorrow and will have no idea if it fixes it or not because its so random and no codes and Jeep dealer is useless as sh*t. They deny there is a problem with the parking brake even though the Jeep rolls down the driveway if I don't put it in gear.

Might I warn everyone to never buy a vehicle from Darcars in Rockville. Useless dealer. Terrible service.

So I read every persons complaint in this thread, and almost every post seemed to be consistent: -Transmission randomly dropped revs or tried to escape if accelerating -Car randomly cuts off, but can restart if you either wait 10 minutes or pull battery terminal -Person was annoyed -Person paid Jeep dealership a ton of money and problem wasn't fixed -Jeep dealer replaced expensive parts (because they make money by replacing parts, and not troubleshooting) -Stranded on side of road (usually wife with children)

So on another thread, I read to replace the camshaft position sensors (2) which cost me $40 a piece. I did it myself, and part of me thinks the issue was better, but then…. it actually wasn't.

So then i stumbled upon this thread, and found that people on the internet get camshaft position sensors mixed up with crankshaft position sensors. If you google one or the other, you will legit get the wrong pictures for both! I'm not kidding!

I then saw that one person replace the crankshaft position sensor ( i say again, crankshaft) and they fixed their issue. I also saw another user on this thread who vividly described the exact same issues i was having (see above) and asked if she had fixed it. Sho-nuff, she did with the Crankshaft sensor…. i say again, CRANKSHAFT! You only have one on the vehicle. If NAPA tells you that you need two, then you accidentally ordering a CAMSHAFT because you are clearly hungover from the previous day of drinking trying to drown your sorrows from just having spent a ton of money on a lift kit and tires and now your wife (and kids as mentioned above) are now stranded on the interstate and you don't have a superman cape to save them….

So… since you don't have a superman cape, and you are pissed off that jeep made this kind of crap, then i highly recommend spending the $16 on this part. Anyone (yes anyone) can install this part. You just have to crawl under your car, on the passenger side of the engine underneath there is a plug running to the part that has a 10mm socket. So if you have a 10 mm socket, and 2 minutes of your life, then do this job yourself. (Note: I puled the negative terminal off just to make sure that the issue reset) It seriously takes 2 minutes….

Worth mentioning, i never post on threads, i just stumble on the solution and move on with my life by doing whatever it is that i do. But with the danger of your car cutting off on the interstate (happened to me) and how easy and cheap it is to fix the issue, tied together with the fact that this site didn't bring you poor bastards some justice, i felt compelled to write this blurb. So if you are still reading, GO TO NAPA! https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/ECHCSS1394

The Jeep would die while I was sitting at a stop light usually. I was never moving when it occurred. The Jeep would idle and it would get to about 4 - 7K RPMs and then just die. I would place car in neutral to restart it and after 10 - 15 seconds it would start right up.

I had been experiencing this issue intermittently for maybe 2 weeks. The first time or two I thought I had done something to make it happen. I had taken it to the repair shop as I had some other work done recently and did not know for sure if it was related. They ran diagnostics and were not able to pull any codes from the computer. After it happened 3 times during my lunch I, decided it was time to take it in and as going to go to to the dealer but they had no available appointments, so went to my neighborhood service location.

I had researched on this site if there were other similar issues. I saw a similar issue described with the fix being to replace the Crankshaft Position Indicator. When I dropped the car off, I specifically mentioned that I wondered if that could be the issue. They said it was possible that they would look at it and try to determine if that was the problem. They could not be 100% sure that it was causing the issue, but I asked that they go ahead and replace the CPI and lets see what happens.

It has been a week and have not had any issues with the jeep shutting off expectantly. Thanks to this website I was able to find a solution to my problem.

Roger - Houston, TX

Update from Mar 9, 2018: It is now March of 2018 and have not had any other issues, since originally reported. YEAH!! I can not say with 100% Certainty that replacing the CPI fixed it but it appears to be a very strong cause of the problems.

Really excited to buy this 2013 Jeep Wrangler Sahara Unlimited! Leave Florida at 6 am Friday headed to Greenville SC, nice ride...until I leave a rest area 2 hours from my destination! Go to hit the gas to merge into traffic and NOTHING.....NO WARNING NO LIGHTS..NOTHING! Just died! Got it off the road in safe location, called a friend who is a mechanic and it took him about 15min to tell us to move fuel pump relay around with a spare plug. Wow started! I then drove the vehicle another 4 days around town and on highways and no problems UNTIL I am 2 miles from my final destination (Cape Cod)! Same thing died NO WARNING! Waited about 10 minutes and it started got home! Take to dealership and they couldn't duplicate the problem but ran some test and reset the brain! Oh should be fine! Two days later, drive to friends house, chat for a few minutes and off we go to the beach, we make it 1 block....dead! Push it back to friends house and there it stays for the 2017 Memorial weekend! Taking it back to dealer in the morning 5/30/2017! Really want to have this fixed so I am not afraid to drive it!

So I was driving on I-4 at 55 mph and my jeep decides to stall in a construction area with no emergency stop lane. I had my 8 and 11 yr old children and my 5 yr old grandson with me. I was in a very dangerous situation, cars and semis zooming by and the car would not start back up for what seem an eternity. I was freaking out and thought I could be hit at any time. After about 15-20 minutes the car started back up. I immediately called the dealer and they told me that I had no warranty left on my vehicle. Mind you this was the third time I took this vehicle for the same problem in the last 3-4 months. Last time was last month and they assured me it was fixed. I'm very frustrated and I don't feel safe driving this vehicle. Worst part is they don't know what is wrong with the vehicle.

Once again, a week later, while coming to work this morning, getting onto the I-605 freeway, I started to accelerate on the gas to catch speed and the truck started to hesitate on me and it turned off on me leaving me with no power like what I had experienced last week with the engine shutting down on me. Whenever I tried to restart the truck, I would get a cranking sound as it would want to turn on but it does not turn. This time it started about 10 minutes after and I was able to drive to work. Last week, it started about 20 minutes after I let it sit. So again, very frustrating.

While driving on the freeway transition from I-605 / to I-405, the Jeep just turned off on me killing all power to the vehicle so I had no power steering when this happened. That afternoon I took it to the Cerritos Dodge dealership where I purchased the vehicle to have this diagnosed and they told me that they ran all kinds of test to see what was wrong with it and they couldn't tell me what was the problem. It was at the dealership till Friday so I was left without a vehicle to move around for work. Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 3.6L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 51,000 miles

About 4 months ago I started feeling what I thought was the transmission slip then re-engage. I took it to the dealer and they couldn't duplicate the issue. They did a computer update that was available which had something to do with shift points. I picked up my Jeep and it did it within 5 minutes. I returned to the dealer and gave it back. This time they replaced the ECM. This didn't fix it either. The Jeep did it's thing 12 times on my way home. I made another appointment and took it back. The service tech drove it home and it never did it for him. So I went up to the dealer and took a drive with the tech. We both felt the issue! So they put something they call a "flight recorder" on the Jeep to record what the issue was. They found it to be a faulty crank position sensor. But, of course that $20 sensor is not covered under the powertrain warranty and it cost me $116 out of pocket for them to repair it. Had I know better I would have done it myself!

The dealer did waive a lot of the fees and labor charges. I really don't have a problem with them. My issue is with the useless FCA powertrain warranty. It will cover the U-Joints in my axle, which is a wear item, but not the CPS?? This is so dangerous, as others have said. Accelerating onto a highway and the CPS craps out is no bueno! How many people does it take to file a class-action suit? Or is there one already? There HAS to be some accidents from this issue! Oh and here is an email from Chrysler about my complaint:

I would like to thank you again, for your patience and understanding while I looked further into your request with Skyland Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram regarding the crank position sensor repair you provided cost for.

I have been in contact with your Service Advisor Michael who has informed that the crank position sensor is an electrical component as it does not run through the engine or come in contact with oil. An electrical component is covered under your basic factory warranty which is a 3 year/36,000 mile factory warranty (whichever comes first) from the in service date of your vehicle. Your 2013 Jeep Wrangler had exceeded both the time and mileage limitations of the basic factory warranty at the time the expense was incurred, which is why you were required to provide cost for the repair.

Service Advisor Michael also did inform us that he did provide a significant discount on the repair cost. He advised you were not charged for the labor or the shop supplies and were only charged for the part itself and the diagnostic charges, which he reduced and only charged $49.95 for each diagnostic charge instead of the full diagnostic charge amount of $89.95.

I realize that vehicle service expenses cannot always be predicted, Jason and as such, they are often disappointing to the vehicle owner. Within warranty parameters, FCA will not hesitate to assume the repair costs; however, after the warranty terms have been exceeded, charges must be accepted by the vehicle owner.

After reviewing the matter and issues raised, as the dealership has already offered a significant discount on the out of warranty repair for your crank position sensor, we would be unable to provide any further reimbursement consideration regarding this repair at this time.

Although I could not provide a more favorable response, I certainly do appreciate the opportunity to review your recent request.

Thank you again for your email. Should you require additional assistance, or have any new information to provide, please reply to this email message or call 1-877-I-AM-JEEP (1-877-426-5337).

Sincerely,

Shae-Lyn

The CPS absolutely comes in contact with engine oil! This should be covered and I feel helpless to do anything about it.

Thanks for listening.

This is the eighth time this vehicle has randomly stalled. I had discontinued allowing my family to drive this vehicle for a while during our battle with Jeep and an apparent useless certified smart warranty program! I was driving across town heading south on I 25, being careful to stay on outside lanes as this vehicle has become a danger when stalling and 80 mile an hour traffic. I did have to go across four lanes to get to an exit, and sure enough it went dead stick in the middle lane! With cars honking and swerving to miss me, I made it to wide spot where the exit entered the freeway and got stopped. Although we were under warranty when we purchased this vehicle, after 3 1/2 months and seven times in the dealership they have decided they will no longer give us a lease vehicle and they're done. The dealership has been stellar as far as service and ease of dealing with, but I really believe jeep should have to do something about the safety issue! So far being one small pipsqueak buying one vehicle from a multibillion dollar company means we're screwed. The dealership has offered to help us trade the vehicle, however since we purchased it only three months ago we are at least $5000 upside down with trade-in values. Who's going to pay the 5000 we're losing for buying a jeep? Thanks Jeep! Way to stand behind your products!

The engine started out dying while stopped at a traffic signals and in reverse backing out of a parking spot. I would have to turn the key all the way off and place transmission in park to restart. Sometimes it will not restart, just crank. If I let it sit for approximately 10 minutes it would restart. Now the problem is worse, the jeep will die while I'm driving at road/hwy speeds. Very dangerous. I lose power steering and power brakes. I've had it at the jeep dealer several times with no luck fixing this problem. They replaced the PCM and valve body in the transmission. Also drove with a co-pilot plugged into the vehicle to record the engine dying. Chrysler techs reviewed the data and have no answers to this problem. My jeep sits at the dealer while they scratch their heads.

Update from Dec 4, 2016: Just got my jeep back from the dealer. So far so good. No random engine dying yet. I asked the service manager to look into replacing the crankshaft position sensor ( not to be confused with the camshaft position sensor). He did some research too and agreed it could be the culprit and replaced it. I've been driving around for several days now and all is well. The jeep use to randomly die every day or so. I hope this did the trick.

Update from Aug 22, 2018: Years later and my problem never returned. Many thanks to the service manager at Simi Valley Jeep for the help. I hope this helps anyone with similar issues.

Update from Oct 20, 2018: The crankshaft position sensor was definitely the problem. After replacing it the stalling has completely gone.

We bought the jeep used in August 2016 with 60,000 miles on it. After having it about two weeks, the jeep randomly stalled on us in traffic. After 10 to 15 minutes it started back up and drove fine for approximately a week. It randomly stalled on my wife and three-year-old son in the middle of traffic and we proceeded to take it to the dealership. This problem has not been fixed, the PCM was replaced, the dealership has had our jeep 4 times and for a combination of six weeks. After reaching third and fourth tier engineer teams and calling Chrysler and filing reports, they finally decided to replace the throttlebody wiring harness. This was after about a month in the shop, we finally got the jeep back and lo and behold it stalled in traffic again! Once again leaving my wife and three-year-old son stranded in the middle of the traffic in a dangerous situation. The random stall has happened six times now, each time in the middle of traffic which presents a very serious problem! At the moment the jeep is back in the shop, and we have no idea what the next step is! The dealership has offered trade in possibilities and we are ready to have nothing to do with Jeep again! I have lived all over the world and personally owned over 30 vehicles (foreign and domestic), this 2013 Jeep Rubicon is by far the least dependable vehicle that I have ever had!
