This may be related to the engine sludge issue causing engine problems; however, the MPG didn't seem to be affected and I was getting 21.3 MPG. I filled my tank several times and noticed that I was never able to get more than 18.5 gallons which seemed like the smaller tank. I took it in to Jeep and they said there was no way to fit a smaller tank in that vehicle.
Over time I noticed the balance was working but the low fuel would trip at around 360 miles which is clearly lower than the 450 it was supposed to get. I would have expected the light around 400ish. It took about a year before the vehicle burn in seemed to take effect and I could get over 400 miles without running out of gas. I found it extremely odd to run out of gas twice and then have it towed to a gas station only to be able to put a max of 18.6 gallons as that seemed really suspicious. However after that first year, I have been able to put over 21 gallons in the tank which is even more strange. I've never had an issue like this in any other vehicle but it is more of an annoyance.
