The timing belt was off by one tooth on one cam (1, 3, 5 side). This was human error from the mechanic's work changing the belt. Fixing the timing corrected the symptom. (No charge, since I already paid to have the work done right.)
The real problem is the sensors and computer only announced P300, P303, P305 - random misfires of cylinders 3 & 5 - which did not quickly equate to a timing problem. It took the dealer and "experts at Kia in California" the better part of 2 days to identify the root cause. Instead of having better sensing, codes, and stock parts to work with, they had to muddle through and blame the oil, the oil filter, etc. before getting to the real root cause.
