Here's yet another story about an oil hose leak. Two days after returning from a 250 mile trip, our Avalon's oil hose began to gush oil on the way home from an 8 mile trip into town. When we pulled into our garage, we found a trail of oil behind us, an awful smell of burnt oil, and no oil showing on the dip stick! I had to add close to 3 qts. of oil and I found the car shooting a stream the width of a milkshake straw while the car was idling. With 73000 miles, I knew our Avalon was out of warranty, so I called a tow service and had it sent to a family member's repair shop. He called me later that day to tell me the problem (without a $90.00 diagnostic machine charge!) and that our local Toyota dealer had nine of these hose assemblies on order because they were out of them! My repairman told me that he would have not been surprised to see this kind of design on a Dodge or Ford but not on a top of the line Toyota! I've been on the phone with Toyota today and the rep. said that there was nothing that they could do to reimburse me. He did offer me a 500.00 credit toward any future repairs and I told him that wasn't good enough and that this should be on recall. He was stupid enough to respond, "The government hasn't made Toyota do that yet." I told him that the government shouldn't have to! I thought Toyota had a better reputation than that. I'm thankful that this thing didn't rupture two days earlier when we were on our way home from St Louis. We would probable have a $5000 repair instead of this $450.00 bill plus the $65.00 tow fee! It's an outrage for Toyota to let this go on, knowing how severe this design flaw is. I hope they get nailed to the wall for it!
