This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Our 2005 Toyota Corolla is having major problems shifting (lurching and stuck gears), and the car is now unsafe for us to drive on the road (we are likely to get rear-ended if we continue to drive). We have taken the car to our mechanic and been informed that we have a defective engine control module. This problem is described in Toyota's technical service bulletin TC014-06. There is an 8yr/80K mile warranty on this part, but our car has over 100K miles so Toyota claims that they have no responsibility to pay for the repair of this defect. However, given the safety concerns with driving the car (and our fear of causing an accident), we have no choice but to fix the defect and believe that Toyota should be held responsible for repairing the defect.
