my Prius suddenly and unexpectedly accelerated at maximal speed. I was in heavy traffic and had to slam on the brakes, narrowly missing back-ending the car in front of me. I believe I accelerated from about 25 mph to close to about 45-50 mph in a matter of seconds. The braking action did, in this case, cause the acceleration to stop at that point. There was no explanation for this, and such an incident had never occurred before. I considered it highly unusual and very concerning. Of note, I had removed the floor-mats some weeks before after learning that this was a recommended step by Toyota.
