2006 Toyota Prius with hid headlights. After 4 years of ownership both hid lamps have failed at 72,000 miles. The lights were working when I leave the garage however when I returned home they were dark. Turning the headlight switch off and back on seemed to correct the problem. I do not know how long they were off or how often this has happened but it is not acceptable to have both hid lamps to hail intermittently and unexpectedly after only 4 years. This style lamp should last years and years. Cost to replace lamps at dealer over $1,000.

I'm among the many who have defective high intensity headlights in my 2006 Prius. Around 20K miles I started having problems with flickering and intermittent outage. The dealer wouldn't replace them for free and I couldn't afford the $1000 it would have cost to replace. While driving at night on a treacherous country road I almost went off the road when the lights went out completely while attempting to turn on the brights.

Problem is at night, you must turn off & on headlight switch for the hid headlights to come back on. This has been an on going problem, have replaced the hid headlights bulbs twice and the ECU headlight computer and the problem still persist.

I own a 2006 Toyota Prius. The headlights have been shutting off, sometimes seconds after turning them on. Sometimes the drivers headlight and others the passengers headlight. I've even been pulled over by an officer, told him about the ongoing issue with trying to get Toyota to own up to it, and was told that he had run across this before. He let me go without as much as a warning. This problem is all over the internet. Toyota refuses to take responsibility. Help. Driving at night with headlights on. Left headlight flickers, a few seconds later the right headlight goes dark. Less than a minute later, the left headlight goes dark. No headlights while driving on hwy 85 in san jose. I slowed and then checked to see if the light switch worked. I turned the headlight switch to off, then back on and the headlights came back on. After less than a minute, the lights repeated their failure process again. I repeated the switch off/on, multiple times until I reached my destination. I cannot operate the vehicle when it is dark.

On my 2006 Toyota Prius, the headlights randomly switch off, sometimes one at a time, sometimes both. The lights will both turn back on if I switch the lights off and back on. The lights switch off again anywhere from a few minutes to a few days after this 'reset.' The car had been driven for only 20,000 miles when the first incident occurred.

The headlamp in the 2006 Toyota Prius worked intermittently. I am unsure of the duration of this but suspect it lasted for approximately six months before taking it to a dealer. The headlamp appeared to dim while driving but stopping and checking revealed that the headlamp was working properly. When the vehicle was turned off and immediately back on, the headlamp worked. It went out while driving and, just as suddenly, came back on. I took it to the dealer and was told that the hid needed to be replaced. Because of the high labor cost to remove the bumper (approximately $300) for headlamp replacement, both lamps were replaced at a cost of about $700. I did not ask for the replaced part and the dealer did not offer it. (the trip to the dealer was delayed until all other possibilities had been explored because the cost involved.) the unsafe condition of driving with one functional headlamp and one intermittently function headlamp was necessary until the money for repairs could be obtained.

The hid headlights on our 2006 Prius will flicker or completely turn off while driving. It happens seemingly randomly, , one side will go out the other will stay on and visa versa or both will go out at the same time. There doesn't seem to be any condition that causes it to happen. If I turn the light switch off and then back on the lights will come back on again, sometimes seconds or minutes will pass and the lights will fail again.

My wife and I were driving on I-25 in Colorado and both of our headlights shut off on our 2006 Toyota Prius, fortunately I have reading about this problem so I turned them off and on again. I've been to three Toyota dealers with no help in sight. I would appreciate any help on this matter.

My 2006 Toyota Prius has a major safety issue. The left headlight has been intermittently going out for over two years now. Turning the light on to high or low beam does not change the status of the light at all, but usually it comes on again when the lights are turned off and immediately turned back on. Within the last two weeks the right headlight has done it twice. I was first aware of the left headlight problem during the spring of 2008 likely at that time with about 25,000 " 27,000 miles. I do not leave the headlights on during daytime driving so there has not been high usage the dealership acts like they have never heard of this problem before, and it might be a light going bad which will cost $300 per light bulb plus installation. But it has been doing it for over two years off and on a long time for a bad lightbulb to last. Totally frustrated after I once again gave the service representative a detailed description of the problem and had a different service rep come out and tell me there was no problem with my headlights, I googled this problem and I see repeated references to exactly the same headlight issues by other 2006 pries owners. Now that I see that this is not just my pries, but many priuses I am doubly concerned. It is not an event I am able to reproduce. The dealership says that they can't diagnose the problem if the lights are working and can"T reproduce it. I said I would gladly bring the car in at any time at night when it was doing it so they could diagnose it, but they can't accommodate me when the problem arises at night because they are closed nor can they suggest any place to take the car to have it tested at that time. Having two working headlights is a legal safety issue or the police would not stop and ticket or warm cars with this problem. Toyota needs to find a fix for this safety issue.

I own a 2006 Toyota Prius. The left front hid headlight intermittently goes out. I have to turn the lights off and then back on to get the light to go back on. This seems to be a common problem after researching it online. NHTSA needs to continue the investigation it started on this matter and require a recall for this dangerous condition.

On my Toyota Prius 2006, the passenger side headlight intermittently goes out for a period of time. Sometimes for an extended period, and sometimes for a short period. The dealership can't find a problem with the headlamp, because, even leaving the lights on all day, the light won't shut off. I can't determine the pattern for the light shutting off, and I often only know about the problem when someone alerts me to a dark headlight. This is a major safety issue because of the intermittent nature, and inability to detect the outage.

I have continued to have recurring headlight issues on my 2006 Toyota Prius. I am on my third headlight and I have replaced two headlight assemblies. On each occasion, we were made aware of the defective headlight by another party as we were driving. It leads to a dangerous situation because it reduces the lighted path at night and could potentially impair another driver's ability to see my vehicle. I had to pay out of pocket for the repair since the extended warranty that I purchased did not cover "burnt bulbs". this is obviously an inherent issue that Toyota has not addressed. Each repair is in excess of $200.

I have 2006 Prius, the driver side head light goes out and then as I am driving. It is unpredictable. If I turn the lights off and then back on, the light works again. I changed both head lights in city Toyota cost $560.72 on Dec.8,2008 and now May 27,2010, the passenger side headlight is not working. It only last 1-1/2 year, this is not acceptable.

I own a 2006 Prius and my headlights keeps going out randomly. I took it to the dealer and it was working fine the whole time. They checked it and couldn't find any problem. The technician told me this has been an issue for lots of Prius cars and told me if it stops working again, to hit it a little bit. This is safety issue and I just want to report this issue.
