The rear latch on the hatchback melted into a gooey tar like mess making it impossible to open the hatchback. Toyota would NOT cover it under any warranty, had to pay almost $300 to get it fixed as the entire mechanism has to be replaced according to the service repair facility.

The more I read about this problem that Toyota has neglected to address on a large scale which involves the trunk or hatch latch melting and then in turn having the entire back piece it connects to break off. I've had this problem for years and I cannot justify paying for repairs that cost anywhere between $300-$400 each time! I've researched forum after forum online to find this a problem among thousands of Prius owners of cars made from 2004 to 2008. I am open to suggestions to help myself and other Prius owners stop getting screwed over by Toyota and dealerships alike, especially in California.

The rubber on the trunk release of my 2007 Prius is melting. Every time I open the trunk my hands get black goop on them. It is also starting to get on the paint. I have read numerous other complaints for this same defect. It is going to continue to worsen and I'm afraid I will not be able to open my trunk. I just purchased this car and cannot afford to get it fixed. I can't understand why there hasn't been a recall issued. Toyota needs to step up and fix this problem before a tragedy happens.
