This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
NHTSA recall number: 20V012 recall date: January 13, 2020 manufacturer recall number: 20tb02 still no contact from dealer on when replacement fuel pump will be available. 11 months seems excessive.
After waiting for 10 months, Toyota has still not delivered a fix for their known fuel tank capacity problem in their 2019 Rav4 hybrid model. Toyota continues to state that the 14.5gal tank has a capacity of more than 500 miles, while owners struggle to put more than 9-10 gallons into the vehicle. The reduced range and inconsistent fuel level readings have left me unsure as to how much fuel the vehicle actually has, resulting in frequent fuel stops and an observed range of closer to 300miles.
Vehicle refueling performance. The gauge does accurately reflect the contents of the gas tank. 14 gal tank empty will not take more than 8 gal of gas. Resulting in a safety issue as you never know when you are out of gas.
The fuel tank tank does not filling up completely and gives misleading information that it is fully filled up when in fact it is about 3-4 gallons short. The gas station pump automatically stop even the gas tank was not fully filled
Shortly after purchase August 2109 I noticed the fuel tank would only hold about 8 gallons of gas from empty. I called the dealer and they were unaware of any problems. I took the car in awhile later and was told Toyota was working on a fix and would call me when it was solved. I waited a couple of months and called Toyota customer service. They said they could put in a new fuel tank but it probably wouldn't correct the issue and when they're fix came out they would contact me. They were correct the problem still exists. I've waited patiently and the car is now 1 yr old. I called Toyota customer service and was told no fix yet. I asked the representative if she could give me that in writing and she refused. I let her know that Toyota sold me a product that was not as advertised on fuel range and tank capacity. A question to nhsta would be if when this vehicle was safety certified was it done with a functioning fuel tank or their defective tank" can this problem cause a safety issue."
My 2019 Rav4 le has a 14.5 gallon fuel tank and only takes about 8 to 9 gallons of gas when I fill up from empty. When I first purchased the vehicle I was getting 450 miles per full tank and now the most I get is 330. I took the car to the dealer and they said that it was normal even though my car was getting 22 miles to the gallon and not 26 mpg which would be on the low end.
The car has stalled twice out of the blue. It was taken to the shop, and they said the vapor lock had gas in it. They wanted to charge $1000. The excuse was when it is hot outside you run the risk of gas getting into the vapor lock every time you fill up... that is bull. It stalled in motion twice on a city street.
We bought the vehicle used. When we try to fill the gas tank up it will only fill up about 3/4 of the way. This is a recurring issue with the gas tank. We took it to Toyota who only reset the computer. However, we are still having the same issue. Even though Toyota is aware this is a common issue, they said they do not presently have a fix and don't know when they'll have one. The fuel reading is not accurate and we are also not getting the full functionality of the vehicle we purchased. We were also not made aware ahead of time that this was an issue on the vehicle.
When we first purchased the vehicle, we used to be able to fill it up all the way and completely now you can't fill it up all the way. When we first bought the car, we were able to get about 450 miles with a full tank of fuel. Now, when we go to fill up, we only get about 350 miles for a full tank when filling up the tank doesn't allow us to fill the tank up completely this is very unusual!
Unable to fill gas tank fully in addition to displayed range being inaccurate. Tank only fills about 3/4 with average distance to empty reading about 350 miles, which is actually more than the distance we are able to travel before needing to refuel.
Fuel tank does not fill to correct capacity. Whenever I fill my tank, even when the low fuel light is on, I am only able to fill approximately 9 gallons. The advertised capacity of the tank is 14.5 gallons. This is verified by the range and fuel indicator on my dashboard. The fuel tank stops filling at about 3/4-7/8 of a tank and then range indicated between 380-400 miles. Toyota advertises a range on 580 miles. Taking into account my current mpg, I should be within about 40 miles of this number.
The gas tank should be 14 gallons, however I am only able to but in to the tank aprox 8 gallons. I can force approx 1 more gallon by pulling out the nozzle on the fuel pump. The trip estimator will say it can only go high 300 to low 400 miles. When I bought new off the lot it was with a max filled tank and trip estimator was at 500 plus miles. The gas gauge never shows full and it doesn't appear to be accurate as to when the tank is low/empty compared with mileage estimator.
The fuel tank on my 2019 Rav4 hybrid does not fill up to capacity and only allows to be filled up to around 10 gallons. I have tried sever different fueling stations, brands, and pump dispensers but none of them allow to car to fill up to it's full limit. Estimated loss of range is around 100 miles per tank.
The fuel tank capacity is about 9 gallons way too lower than the specification. This is causing too many trips to the gas station than expected. The purpose of buying a hybrid is defeated.
