Sienna LE 3.5L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 154,866 miles

Whenever I'm driving on a curve, incline or sometimes a straightaway, the traction control kicks in; sounding an alarm and automatically braking my van, causing it to pull severely to one side or the other.

My 2008 Sienna van has had the 'slip' indicator light go off and on and the check engine light on for several months. I had brought it into local mechanic and he couldn't find anything wrong so I continued to drive van and observe the dashboard and van response to speed. Except for loud beeping when the car was on a curve (usually more than 40 mph on freeway), nothing else happened until 8/13/16.

During drive through highway 17 going to Santa Cruz Boardwalk, the brakes seemed to lock and the steering wheel felt 'heavy'. The beeping was quite loud and startled me and my children who were in the car with me. We were driving uphill, traffic was fair speed, going about 50+. Luckily the the freeway divider was on my left and the mountain drop-off didn't happen until a minute later - after the incident. There are a lot of curves on this drive. I lowered my speed about 10 mph overall and dropped speed beyond the norm on ALL curves. On the drive back home hours later, the beeping happened again despite that I was driving no more than 40 and took curves VERY carefully. Luckily the brakes didn't lock.

I am researching recalls for this problem online before I bring it to local dealer and/or my local mechanic. It was a very scary event and my heart is palpitating already just remembering the loss of control while van in motion - especially with my children in the van with me.

Going forward, I will post status of Toyota's response

On August 10, 2015 I was on my way home. I was about 1 mile from my turn off the highway so I had begun to slow a little. I remained in the right hand lane and was preparing to move over into the left lane and then the turn lane to the left to my subdivision. Suddenly, (these events took place simultaneously) the VSC light, the traction assist light, the check engine light, and the transmission light all came on. At that same moment, the rear end of my 2008 Toyota Sienna appeared to lock up. I can not tell you if it was the transmission or the brakes, but something brought (or attempted to) bring my vehicle to a dead stand still in the middle of a busy highway. Because I have now gone into a slide/shimmy, the steering wheel was to difficult to control causing me to let it go. At that moment in time, I was jolted off the road and into the nearby woods, striking a tree. Upon hitting the tree, the van's engine was already dead. Not a single air bag deployed, nothing. I called Toyota on August 14, 2015. I have given them permission to pull data from the EDR. They did so and sent me a copy of the jump drive. From what I can tell from this information, it just reiterates what I have already told them. However, I have not heard another word from them. Every time I try to call my "case manager", he isn't available and although I am assured he will return my call within 24 hours, he never does. This van was totaled by insurance. I told Toyota that and they STILL TRIED TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS FOR ME TO BRING IT BY A SHOP TO HAVE IT CHECKED!! Hello, right hand meet left hand. I was in the process of trying to buy a house and was forced to buy a new vehicle at the same time. I am already sick of dealing with this. Then I found out that there was several recalls on my vehicle, NONE of which I knew about. Has anyone else had trouble with the VSC or tracAssist locking up?
