I should have complained to Toyota that I shouldn't have to pay for a transmission on a Toyota with only 108,000 miles on it. Instead, I took the dealer's word (Round Rock Toyota) that Toyota would not pay for it.
Transmission failure with only 84000 is ridiculous. This is the first and last Toyota I will ever own. Pay that kind of money for this level quality, what a rip-off. No wonder they got out of Formula 1, they can't even build reliable consumer cars.
Only 4000 miles out of warranty, this transmission failed. Even though the service writer said that it is extremely rare, it was not until I wrote letters to the owner of the dealership (this was the third Toyota I had purchased) and demanded that I speak to the regional service rep, that I was given reprieve from the cost of the replacement.
Since when should a Toyota transmission fail at 64000 miles?
An acquaintance on the South shore of Boston suffered the same fate with her Sienna, transmission replacement...
Headed out west for a family wedding and noticed on our way into Colorado that the check engine light came on. Once we got there, I went to an auto parts store, only to be told that store didn't pull codes. He suggested a shop down the road, but when I tried to back out of my parking space, the car died. RPM's went to zero. I was able to limp the car to the shop by holding down the gas while shifting, and when we got to the shop, he pulled the following code:
P0741 Toyota - Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Performance
Well, the shop guy told me to take my car to the transmission shop in town and get him to look at it. Problem is, the transmission guy in town wouldn't take it. He said that the Toyota transmission is one he wouldn't touch. Great. Now I'm 1200 miles from home and he's telling me that I have to go to a dealer to get it fixed. Only problem is that the closest dealer is 90 miles away...over a mountain range.
So we are able to limp around town for a day or two, waiting for Monday to try and get over the mountain. Noticed that the RPMs are all over the place. Having trouble getting into gear. Can't know for sure that the van will accelerate after stopping, say, at a stop light. So we head to the dealer, for the most white-knuckle, oh crap drive ever, but make it to the dealer only to be told that the tranny needs to be replaced and its gonna cost $7000 dollars. Uh...no its not. Talked them down, and now its getting fixed, but I'm still stuck 1200 miles from home, while this stupid transmission problem.
Transmissions shouldn't go out at ~130k. Something was definitely wrong. Ugh. Also, always ask for a discount. They took almost $2k off, just because I asked.
