9 yr. old child was in the middle of the back seat with the seat-belt on. She laid down on the seat to sleep. She had the shoulder portion wrapped behind her when she awoke.
We arrived at our destination. She released the buckle, the seat belt immediately retracted and would not release. It continued to tension as we tried to release her. Everything we tried caused the seat belt to continue to retract tighter. Restarted the car, applied brakes - nothing would cause the belt to release. The belt was so tight around her waste, she had bruising and broken skin - not to mention being frightened. We had to cut the belt to release her. Thank God we had a knife with us.
Contacted Toyota - referred us to the owners manual stating this could happen and you would have to cut the belt. Really! I then asked does this mean I should expect to have to cut passengers out of my vehicle every year to so? Spend another $350 for a new seat belt assembly to be installed and possibly have to use a knife again to get a passenger out of the car? Basically I am free to file a claim - good luck with that.
Expected better from Toyota.
