CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2002-2005 Explorer has a very well-established record of expensive transmission failure at under 100k miles. The Explorer has an enclosed transmission which is typically replaced with a rebuilt transmission at a cost of almost $3,000.

Adding insult to injury, the 2002-2005 Explorer also has a massive problem with the rear panel cracking. While it's a minor annoyance compared to transmission failure, ironically the crack usually goes right through the Ford logo.

I recently went to get into my car to go to work, and when I tried to engage the gear shifter is didn't want to go into reverse so I tried again and the gear shifter broke off of the casing of the steering column and I had to replace the whole steering column in order to drive my vehicle again.

About 1 month ago the heater began to not function correctly. It kept making a clunking sound, before providing heat. Now there is absolutely not heat at all. I was looking online, and realized many people had this problem. Why isn it a recall then. The average cost of this repair is $600. I am very disappointed that Ford wont stand behind their product.
