CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2002-2005 Explorer has a very well-established record of expensive transmission failure at under 100k miles. The Explorer has an enclosed transmission which is typically replaced with a rebuilt transmission at a cost of almost $3,000.
Adding insult to injury, the 2002-2005 Explorer also has a massive problem with the rear panel cracking. While it's a minor annoyance compared to transmission failure, ironically the crack usually goes right through the Ford logo.

Purchased new Explorer, at close of deal, we were asked if we wanted alarm system "that was already on car" Said if not they would take it off. Of course we did not want anything "taken off" car so they added another 300.00 to contract. Two days later dealership calls to set up appointment to install that, "up graded alarm system"... that alarm system that was suppose to be already on the car! Top everything, Ford dealership sub work out and alarm sys. is put on by some jerk who installs it so we no longer can use our tilt steering wheel in any position but up! Note this car is only 3 days old, and feel that we have been taken advantage of, possibly con to buying something that is of no uses, because car comes with security/anti theft system Am I making too much of this, and is there really a up grade approved by Ford?
