Our Explorer started having lost power and a check engine light and actually went back to the dealership twice. The first time they found a completely clogged, split open and leaking catalytic converter. This was replaced under extended warranty. Normal repair cost of about $2000. After getting the Explorer back the same problems reoccurred within 2 weeks and we took it back. This time they found that the head gasket had failed and water was getting into cylinders 2 and 4. Tear down an inspection revealed damage to the engine and turbo. The engine and turbo were replaced and it took a month. All covered under extended warranty, if not it would have been $9,000.
