Accord LX 2.2L

Daughter was driving car down the road and she stepped on the gas and the engine quit.Engine turns over good but there is absolutely no spark. Fuel pump seems to be working because you can smell gas. Want to fix the problem myself because we can't afoord to get it towed or the repairs. Are there certain steps I should take before replacing alot of the electrical parts(distributor,rotor etc.?) Any response would be greatly appreciated!!!
