CarComplaints.com Notes: The 1999 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, subframe rust, engine shuts off while driving, & peeling paint. We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 100,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

Engine stalling while driving in the 1999 Accord is typically caused by a defective ignition switch -- inexpensive to repair (under $200) but dangerous.

Peeling paint has also been an issue for these Accords. Most of the complaints are with darker paint colors -- especially green & blue.

I have serious issues with my Honda Accord. First, the transmission has failed. It began with it slipping in higher gears when hot and finally failed when it wouldn't shift out of low gear. This transmission is the same transmission that is in the 00-04 Honda Accord that were recalled. Honda refused to offer any type of owner assistance. My expense to repair: $1516.30 second issue: In 2002 the ignition switch was recalled. The car died on the freeway and had to be towed two days after I received the recall notice. Honda repaired the vehicle no charge for parts and labor but refused to pay for the towing expense. My cost: $75. Now the ignition switch has failed again and Honda has refused to replace it at no charge or with any type of owner assistance even though this same part was replaced as part of a recall. I have been given an "estimate" of $275 to repair. Freeman Honda of dallas replaced the switch under the recall. I've contacted john Eagle Honda of dallas, on lemmon ave, and left messages for[xxx] the service manager but have not received a return phone call. I spoke with a service consultant who point blank told me my car is out of warranty and they will do nothing to help me. I called Honda customer assistance and was told they would not participate in any type of owner goodwill or assistance with either repair. I understand parts fail but these two repairs are known product issues for Honda! information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

I am the original owner of the vehicle and have followed all the recommended maintenance milestones at the same dealership since I purchased the vehicle. I was driving on highway and the transmission went out. This caused the vehicle to lose speed and I was almost rear ended by another vehicle. I called Honda and they said that even with regular maintenance they will not stand behind the transmission after three years. I believe they should at least help in the cost of the repairs which are around $3,600 to rebuild the transmission.

Transmission fail squills whines loud in reverse won't go in reverse sometime squills whines in park when started only way to hush it is to throw in drive then into neutral and pull the park brake. In drive it shifts hard going up in gears then when slowing down it down shifts hard like a manual transmission sometime hard enough to squill the tires. This is a big problem with 98-02 Honda Accord automatic transmissions and this needs to be fixed its going to get someone killed. Honda needs to be forced to recall these car/ cars and fix the problem.

My car's transmission shifts badly. When shifting between 1st and second gear it jumps badly and sometimes wont shift at all. And even from second to third it does it too. After I'm in the higher gears it shifts better. But in those early gears my car is dangerous. I'm afraid it might completely stop working one day. I've read online all the complaints people have about my same year of Accord and the years surrounding it: Almost all of them have a faulty transmission. I think that Honda needs to fess up about their faulty trasmission and do a real recall. I'm one of many concerned Honda owners and wish that they would own up to the problem. Many people wont be going back to Honda brand cars because of this problem, including me.

The contact owns a 1999 Honda Accord. The contact was driving approximately 80 mph when his knee haphazardly struck the gear selector, causing the gear to shift from drive into neutral. The gear shifter lever control was not engaged during the time of the unintended failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact planned to notify the manufacturer of the malfunction. The approximate failure mileage was 132,000.

My 17 year old daughter just bought a 1999 Honda Accord. After less than 24 hours she noticed the transmission slipping when going into 2nd gear. If you attempt to accelerate, the transmission causes the entire car to shake violently while not accelerating. This problem is known to Honda for many years. There are thousands of instances of this same problem and literally hundreds documented online. How many people will have to be injured or even die when the car fails to respond to a driver entering traffic before Honda will admit they knew the transmissions they were installing were defective and provide a fix?

I bought this car new in 1999 while working as a salesman for a Honda dealership.its always been well maintained as it is the only transportation I have.I no longer work at the dealership but my little boy needs a way to get to various activities as well as school.we depend on this machine and Honda reputation to get things done.around 76000 miles the transmission started to shift hard and not want to go into gear. After checking around various shops and the internet I was surprised to find out that so many other owners of 1999-2002 Accord had the same problems or worst.some with only 50000 miles had to be replaced.I'm pretty sure this is an american Honda deal as the Japanese people would back up their products.once again we get screwed by our fellow greedy americans.I will not be buying another Honda product be it a lawnmower, car, motorcycle, generator or paper bag for that matter.I will also warn everyone I know by internet and carrier pidgeon about american Honda and their lack of ethics.what goes around comes around!

I have 91,000 miles on my Honda Accord LX 99 year model. I have maintained it very well with regular check ups and services. Transmission on my car behaves so erratic and its beyond my control. It suddenly stops in middle of drive and I am afraid of someone hitting me from behind because of this nature of my car.

Transmissions slips and shifts roughly and inconsistently. Warranty has been extended but only for '00 & '01 models. Same faulty transmission standard with 1999 Accord. It is only a matter of time before people start getting hit and do the hitting as shifting becomes unpredictable.
