CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2004 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure & problems with the stereo backlight failing. We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 90,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000. Transmission failure has been a huge problem for the Accord & several other Honda models all through the early 2000s model years. Honda extended the transmission warranty to 93 months/109k miles for the 2000-2001 Accord as a class action lawsuit settlement, but owners of other Accord model years with transmission problems are out of luck.

The stereo backlight problem has been an issue ever since these Accords were only a few years old. Honda eventually issued a recall which covered the repair for 7 years/100k miles, which was nice while it lasted but now that period is over. Honda initially replaced the entire radio ($800) but eventually began replacing just the PCB which at ~$300 is much cheaper. That sounds like a deal, but keep in mind we're talking about a backlight bulb that costs $2 to fix in most other cars.

The contact owns a 2004 Honda Accord. The contact stated the headlights would shut off while driving at night. Also, the windows malfunctioned when the failure occurred and the contact was unable to open or close the windows. The dealer informed the contact to replace the radio. A private mechanic replaced the radio and two days after the radio was replaced, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was aware of the failure but did not offer any assistance. I leased a 2004 Honda Accord ex V6 in may of 2004, from rick case in miramar fl. On August 31, 2005, I had to have my O ring discharge line replaced, due to leaking power steering fluid and noise. Then, on April 3, 2006 I had to have my entire radio/cd player changed out due to led not working and both back window motors replaced due to loud noise and rolling down slowly. In July 2006, I relocated to atlanta, ga and purchased this vehicle via retail (transferred the title) in August 2007. Then, November 9, 2007, I had to have the power steering pump replaced due to leaking fluids and a loud noise. Today is August 6, 2009 and I am again having the same power steering issues!! other problems that I am currently having with my car: Had to get my battery changed August 9, 2007; window motor problems with both my front seat windows; internal lights not working on transmission gear-shift, over-head light. I am so unhappy with this Honda purchase as I thought that they were known for their longevity, especially since I have been the only owner and got the car brand new. The main thing is I need answers or directions as to what my next step. Please advise, thank you. I am still making payments on this car!! updated 08/07/09.

While getting into a 2004 Honda Accord 4door, I grasped the door frame wrapping my fingers around the top support that surrounds the window on the passenger side. Apparently the driver engaged the up button from the drivers side. This caused the passenger window to trap my fingers with great force! since then my fingers have caused me enduring pain. I feel strongly that there should be a safety contact in the weather striping to prevent anything from being exposed to this force! I found one such item patent #6337549. I had a similar idea. I think this should me required on all cars/trucks or other such device (like an advanced motor sensor).
