CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2008 Honda Accord has several serious defects: poor brakes, excessive oil consumption, & uncomfortable seats.

BRAKES: There was a class action lawsuit against Honda in 2010 for premature & excessive brake wear. See our page on Honda's brake problems for more info.

OIL CONSUMPTION: Honda issued a TSB about this in late 2011, claiming it could be fixed through a software update to the VCM (variable cylinder management). There are class action lawsuits pending. See our page about the Accord oil consumption.

UNCOMFORTABLE SEATS: Owners have consistently reported uncomfortable seats with the entire 8th generation (2008-2012) of Honda Accords. Complaints range from back pain to leg circulation problems due to bad lumbar support, cushioning, & seat angle. Complaints aren't limited to only a certain body type -- the seat comfort problems are from a wide spectrum of owner height & weight. The common theme we hear is "we never noticed this during the test drive." Unfortunately for unwary buyers, the seat pain is noticeable after 15-20 minutes.

The contact owns a 2008 Honda Accord. While driving approximately 40 mph, the contact noticed smoked underneath the hood without warning. The vehicle was pulled into a parking lot, where an independent mechanic lifted the hood, and stated that the alternator was smoking. The vehicle was towed to moss motors (337-235-9086, located at 1407 la 728-8, lafayette, la 70501) where the technician diagnosed and replaced the alternator. Prior to that failure, the same dealer replaced the steering pump and the starter in 2015 when the steering pump leaked and destroyed the starter. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures and offered a forty percent discount towards the cost of the repairs. The failure mileage was approximately 77,000.

The car was brand new and the steering was to hard to turn, so we took it to Honda on centinela ave. Near ladera heights, they wanted to charge us $1200 to replace it. A couple months later we took the car to santa monica dealer 18th street. They stated the power steering pump was leaking and the rack needed to be replaced. They said that I have to pay $1200 but Honda Accord America was going to give me a 50% discount. I paid 50%. then when driving back to my house, I heard a lot of noise, like something was loose. The noise got worse, when I was turning left, right or going into a deep area. So I took the car back and they said, they cannot hear the noise. I took the car back and now they are saying that nothing is wrong with the car. They said the struts are damaged and power steering hoses are liking all over. Car only has 30,000 miles, I don't really use it that much. This is a lemon car. Can something be done?

My car was leaking fluid which I was unaware. My starter went out and the dealer said that the power steering fluid was leaking so bad if I did not repair it there could be an engine fire as well as damage to the alternator. He had to replace the entire power steering pump because he said that the leak was too bad to just replace the O ring and hose. I brought my car to moss motors in lafayette, Louisiana for the repair. I believe that since I only had 70,000 miles on my car that this power steering system is an obvious defect and safety hazard.

I purchased a new 2008 Honda Accord from what is now known as bel air Honda. I had less than 50,000 miles when I had two sets of rear brake pads replaced. The 2nd set was replaced with a 3rd. At approx. 37,000 miles and the replacement was at my expense. The first two times I was reimbursed for the install, but the 3rd time the dealer and Honda said sorry this ones on you. I feel this expenditure should not have been mine to pay. In less than 50,000 miles I had two power steering pumps replaced. The 4th time the steering box also was damaged and it to replaced. This last time I was told this again was my expense so again their problem became mine. This time the dealer, bel air Honda said lucky I bought the extended warranty or the cost to me would have been approximately $1,600. My worry is that I could have a steering or brake failure while on the interstate causing an injury to me or someone else. I have voiced my concerns to both american Honda and bel air Honda. They blame one another regarding the mechanical failures to my car. The dealer said Honda sent them defective parts and Honda said its a install problem. I have sent and spoke to many representatives of Honda Motors and there response to me amounted to them suggesting things will be getting better and hang in there. So I have a car that I feel unsafe driving that no one seems to be concerned with. Their philosophy seems to be, get it repaired and maybe you'll have better luck next time. My Honda is true and its been a total sad experience for me. Their the goliath and I'm david with no recourse to the total disregard to my on problem. Honda probably has a good track record, but if you are having a serious problem with their car like I have, you get no satisfactory help from the automobile giant. There is a lot more to this sorry situation, but I am or will go over the limit I am allowed in this complaint memo. Your help in getting my story told will be appreciated. Updated IVOQ 09/07/11.

My Honda Accord 08 steering wheel vibrates and shakes as when I press on the brake traveling 60+ miles on the freeway. Honda dealer told me that I should replace the brakes and I did but still has the same problem. I feel unsafe driving my car on the freeway. And replacing brakes when my car has only 20,000 miles does not make any sense to me. My steering wheel started to shake when the car had less than 10,000 miles on it. What should I do??

Vibration/shimmy in the steering wheel. Took vehicle to purchasing dealer twice. Dealer could not fix shimmy. Dealer said that's the way Honda is making them. Shimmy starts ~ 60 mph and continues through 75 mph. Shimmy is intermittent and varying in intensity depending on vehicle speed and load. Took to 2nd dealer and verified problem. 2nd dealer also verified other 2008 Accord having the same problem.

I took delivery of 2008 Honda Accord coupe (4 cylinder automatic) in August of 2008. From day one I experience a steering wheel and suspension/drivetrain vibration & shimmy at speeds between 45-65 mph. The dealer replaced tires and wheels, and balanced four wheels during first service visit. On the second and last offered service visit for this defect, the dealer determined that the vehicle was "operating as designed". they did not state that they could not verify the complaint and stated they would not make anymore attempts to diagnose or repair the problem.
