CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2009 Honda Accord has several serious defects – poor brakes, excessive oil consumption, & uncomfortable seats.

BRAKES: There was a class action lawsuit against Honda in 2010 for premature & excessive brake wear. See our page on Honda's brake problems for more info.

OIL CONSUMPTION: Honda issued a TSB about this in late 2011, claiming it could be fixed through a software update to the VCM (variable cylinder management). There are class action lawsuits pending. See our page about the Accord oil consumption.

UNCOMFORTABLE SEATS: Owners have consistently reported uncomfortable seats with the entire 8th generation (2008-2012) of Honda Accords. Complaints range from back pain to leg circulation problems due to bad lumbar support, cushioning, & seat angle. Complaints aren't limited to only a certain body type -- the seat comfort problems are from a wide spectrum of owner height & weight. The common theme we hear is "we never noticed this during the test drive." Unfortunately for unwary buyers, the seat pain is noticeable after 15-20 minutes.

I find that my 2009 Honda Accord with low mileage has to have the rear break PADS replaced twice which the 1st time in late 2010 the Honda Accord mileage was at 12,828. and do to a re call i took it in by then the 2nd time12/2011 at a oil change at the dealership at 29,573 miles again was told i needed the rear break PADS (again) i had no other choice then to replace them. i never thought i would be going thru this with what i thought was a reliable /dependable vehicle

Can't believe that I got duped! The first Honda that I owned also had to have the rear brakes fixed at around 20,000 miles. Had I realized that this was an ongoing problem I never would have bought another one. I feel having to put over $400.00 plus tax on new brakes on a car that only had 20,085 miles on it was way out of line. I am asking you for a refund for the amount of the brakes since Honda knew that this problem existed even before I bought the car. I also think that the better business bureau should be notified of this ongoing problem. I will be looking forward to your prompt attention & looking forward to seeing a refund sent to me!!

Very Disappointed with Honda and Luther Hopkins Dealership. Needed rear brakes replaced at 24K. Front were perfectly fine. Outer Pad (still good). Honda will pay $150 because of the class action but will not own up to the problem completely and do a recall. Will expect to need to replace the rear brakes again soon. Will never buy Honda again.

We got a 2009 honda accord at 28,691 miles w/ premature pads worn down to the metal that ruined 1-rotor.The caliper 's are defective and they know it yet they do not want it said as to not add a recall to all cars that have this problem. Some one is going to be injured or even dead if honda does nothing to fix this situation.Honda is playing Russian roulette w/ the public's lives.I'm going to sell this P.O.S.

The rear brake pads were on my 2009 Honda Accord replaced free of charge by the dealer about two years ago. The pad wore out again at at approximately 50,000 miles. This means the pads wear out on average every 25k miles. This time, I replaced it myself using the upgraded brake kit, Part # 43022-TA0-A40. Note that this part is the recommended replacement for Part# 3022-TA0-A00, -A51, and -A70. The brake pad kit cost me about $85 plus tax.

What is different about the new kit? Visually I did not see any difference between the old and the new brake pads except that the new kit contains a spring for each pair of pads. The spring pushes the pads away from the disc, when it is installed. My old brake pads did not have springs. Hopefully the spring would help.

The new brake kit contains installation instruction that instructs to swap the brake caliper slide pin locations. It does not explain why. I installed the new pads according to the instruction. The spring is shown to be installed on the bottom holes located on the pads and the spring should be oriented such that it forms an inverted vee shape (the vertex pointed up)

Well, I will wait and see how the new brake pads will fare in the coming months. It will be a shame if it wears out again after another 20 to 25k miles.

Purchased our Accord brand new and found out there was a brake recall. Now we are told we need another set of brakes which will be the 3rd set in less than 55 000km. How is this right.....We purchased a Honda because we thought they were a great car. Honda knows that the brakes are made out of a cheap material but they still expect the consumer to replace the brakes with their own money. What a total rip off.

Accord EX 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 32,306 miles

This was an unexpected repair at relatively low mileage. When the brakes were last checked, at 22000 miles, was not informed of unusual wear. I had the car in for a 30000 mile service call, already expensive, when they called me at home saying the brakes were toast, needed new pads and the rotors resurfaced. Told them to go ahead and then did an internet search because rear brakes do not normally wear out well before front brakes which are still in great shape. This job normally costs $257.95 plus tax. Brakes wear out, I know it, but not this quickly. I was fortunate that the damage was not severe and even more costly.

I purchased a 2009 Accord EX-L Coupe with Navigation in May 2009. It's now almost ten months later, and I only have 6,000 miles on it. Off and on, the brakes have made noise from day one. It's annoying to say the least. After reading/hearing about all the brake problems, I called American Honda, and let them know. They documented the information---you should all be doing this to protect yourselves! Then, after searching online, I found an attorney that has already proceeded with a class-action lawsuit on all 2008 and 2009 Honda Accord owners with brake problems. I filled in my information online and they called me about a week later confirming what was going on with the lawsuit and telling me they'd email me whenever they have updated information. In my opinion, I think there will ultimately be a recall. So, to help you with your frustration and make you feel a little better, this is the link I found. Check it out. Also, they have an 800 number if you want to actually speak to someone. Let me know how it turns out. I hope this helps a lot of you! :)

We got the 2009 Honda in December of 2009, and the rear brakes are metal on metal already?. We leased the car so we wouldn't have to pay for major repairs. Honda is only giving $150 of $400 back? My husband has been loyal to Honda and the Accord since 1998. NO MORE HONDAS IN THIS FAMILY! We had to spend $400 up-front and wait for $150.

THIS IS HORRIBLE HONDA! I can't believe what you are putting your customers through. I will tell the world what happened. Too bad Honda, you will no longer be in our house and many others. OK, some are saying, "45,000 miles is time to get brakes fixed" That is WRONG! We got our Jeep in August 2007, it has 95,000 miles, and we just had to get new brakes this week-it wasn't even metal on metal.

This is a known problem with Honda 2009 accord brakes. The brake job and cutting rotor COST $287.00. We had to submit a $150.00 claim against the class action suit, so total cost was $137.00. This is a ridiculous cost, considering the brakes had only 17,000 miles on them. If Honda can't stand guarantee their workmanship than why should I trust them with my family's safety.

I HAD THE BRAKES REPLACED AT 22,OOO....way sooner than I have ever had to have brakes replaced before. I had to pay out of my own pocket as Honda said they were aware of the problem but would not cover it as it was considered normal wear and tear of the vehicle. I now have 80,000 miles and am in need of having my brakes replaced for the 4TH TIME!!! This is my first non American car...I thought Hondas were supposed to be great cars...I am finding out otherwise....

I will NEVER buy another Honda, after they knew about the problem to begin with. The first time the rear brakes failed at 18,000 miles, same brakes again at 42,000 miles. First time bill was $250. Second time my bill was $471. Honda's regional rep from customer service returned my call and said "Sorry, you're on your own. There's nothing we can do for you since the lawyers took it out of our hands. Same from the dealership, where they are evasive. At the dealership yesterday i got a little angry, and said "So either i sell the car and take a loss, or continue to keep bringing it back and paying for new brakes."

The technician said, "Yeah, that is the question." Now I HATE Honda for throwing THEIR problem, THEIR mistake in my lap.

Accord LX 3.2L V6

The front brakes were "chattering" on a hard stop - could feel in the brake pedal and steering wheel. The diagnosis: "rotors blued and hotspotted/overheated causing rotors to warp."

This is driven 13 miles each way to work - all back roads. This is not a race car! This should NOT be happening at this mileage and under these use conditions!
