This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
The contact owns a 2007 BMW 328xi. The contact stated that the passenger side air bag indicator illuminated and remained lit. The contact called BMW of rochester at 585-617-0465 (located at 4250 w henrietta rd, rochester, NY 14623) and was informed that there was no recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall. The contact was referred to NHTSA. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.
The seat bag sensor is continuously on. There is no one in the seat. This started at about 65K, the car now has 106K...is this dangerous to a passenger? of course, this seems to activate the seatbelt light also...
Passenger air bag sensor in the seat mat is defective causing the air bag to not read correctly the passenger weight and possibly deploying with a child in the seat. The light remains on at all times. There are recalls out for other BMW autos for this same reason 17V-428 - this model and year wasn't included in the recall list but is also carrying a defective part.
The seatbelt light is on as if there is someone in the car without a seatbelt on. The airbag light is on and the engine light as well. They all popped up around the same time.
Passenger airbag restraint failure - BMW's, in particular 3 series and E90 models, have a known and common failure where the seat based electrical mat fails in the passenger seats. This is not related to wear and tear as the seats often go unused but simply fail after a certain period of time. The error causes the passenger side airbag to default to always on, which can cause injury or death to children or small passengers in that seat. The cost to repair this is usually $200 for parts and $400 for labor which means many drivers simply don't fix it creating a vulnerability. The issue has been recurring with bmws for several generations and across model types and should be addressed by the manufacturer as its a poorly made part and set up. There are numerous documented cases on BMW forums and a partial recall for some models was implemented. A full recall is needed on all cars affected, including 2007 3 series models. The issue does not appear fixed until the F model 3 series came out.
