The car starts up with no problem no matter what. After i drive 10-40 min the damn thing dies when i stop moving. it will start right back up but as soon as i put it in gear it dies. The only way i can get anywhere after this happens is by revving up my engine then dropping it into gear. sounds scary (it is) but works for now. SOMEONE TELL ME WHATS WRONG!!!

Pretty damn sad: a car with 22,000 miles on it has a problem with engine stalling and nobody can tell you what is wrong!

Cavalier Convertible

  • Automatic transmission
  • 80,000 miles

The first time the car stalled, it was almost in the middle of a busy intersection. Having driven fine all morning, it suddenly would not hold an idle in the afternoon. I had to limp it home. It did this several times over the next 2 years. We replace things here and there to help. But I have heard other people complain about the same problem with this car.

IT REALLY SCREWED WHEN YOU ARE ON AN IMPORTANT MISSION AND THINK YOU'RE ROLLING, LISTENING TO YOUR MUSIC AND THEN YOU COME TO A LIGHT AND YOUR #%#% CAR SHUTS DOWN, ESPECIALLY WITH THE #%# TEMPERTURES BEING OVER A 100 DEGRESS HERE IN TENNESSEE, AND YOU DON'T KNOW WHY YOUR CAR IS SHUTING OFF.

1988 Cavalier ran great until you came to a stop and then the engine would bog down and die. It was the control solenoid that got stuck and killed the engine. After the control valve was serviced the problem was solved but this was after a rebuilt transmission was installed.

when engine is hot, its shuts down when you come to a stop, will start back and will idle and run till you put it in gear, if you let it sit a while then it will work for awhile.
