About 2 years ago I took my car into the local Chevy dealership and had the sensor changed for the passenger air bag. A few weeks after they changed the sensor the problem returned. It would not turn the air bag on even when a full grown adult was sitting in the seat. It didn't happen all of the time so when I took it back to the dealer and the said they couldn't replicate the problem. After taking it back about 4 times and them never being able to duplicate the problem I quit taking it in. Luckily the first time it was fixed my vehicle was still under the extended warranty. (thank god I bought that! I've sure used it!) now this year, the passenger air bag won't turn on at all even with my 200lb boyfriend sitting there. The only thing that happens is the service air bag light comes on the dashboard. I've taken it back to the dealership and they've duplicated the problem and want me to pay $600 to get it fixed. I don't feel that the same thing should have to be fixed twice in just 2-3years. Especially since it's not a maintenance problem. There is obviously something wrong with the sensor.

The passenger air bag light on the dashboard went from an "on" to "off" status while the vehicle was in drive with an adult passenger aboard and the seatbelt fastened. We had the vehicle at the dealer, bob fisher Chevrolet, reading, pa, for an inspection and oil change - and also reported this instance. My wife was called and told there was no recall effecting our VIN. Also that it would not react as described "at that time". reference GM notice #07174 dated Aug 22, 2007. The dealer stated that as our VIN was not in the "range recalled" that they would not be able to properly fix the problem as GM would not reimburse them. So, what does constitute GM's and the dealers responsibilities when there is some sort of obvious safety problem?

Equinox

  • 82,000 miles
The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that the front passenger seat was built with a sensor system for the air bags however, there was an error in the calibration of the sensor, which caused the sensor to fail. As a result, the air bags would not shut off when a small child or small statured person was occupying the passenger's seat. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who refused to diagnose the vehicle because the vehicle was not purchased at that particular dealer. The contact was informed of a recall for the failure under NHTSA campaign number: 07V344000 (air bags). The manufacturer was notified but offered no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 82,000.

I've had my Equinox for about 5 years now. The service air bag light came on and constantly been on for the past several weeks. Took it to the dealership and said it would cost about $850 to replace the passenger presence sensor. Had them run a report to change for open campaigns or recalls and there wasn't one for my car. But, with all the complaints I've read online, I strongly believe a recall needs to done. The light did come on intermittently since I bought in May 2007 but I thought it was a loose fuse. Ridiculous!

First problem happened recall on spark plug boot 1 cylinder wasn't firing, was fixed under warranty as was the gasket for the hatchback was bad. That lead to a gallon or so of water into my spare tire compartment. This has since happened again and I need another gasket. The driver side window stopped working, being a electrician I found to broken wires inside rubber boot on door hinge side. ABS light constantly comes on/off computer says ABS needs service ( sensor problem). Gas gauge is reading incorrectly, I have to use the range setting on the computer. Speedometer readings incorrect sits at 60mph when the car is off. I bought this vehicle brand new and have nothing but problems, most of any vehicle I've owned. Current mileage 63,000 miles.

My airbag light came on in my vehicle. I didn't think anything of it because all of my onstar diagnostics stated everything was ok. I brought the vehicle in to the dealership to get a dome light and rear wiper motor replaced and to get a state inspection. My vehicle failed inspection due to the failed passenger presence module. Although the part is recalled on other 2007 Chevy equinoxes, it has not been recalled on my vehicle. I value the safety of my family, but to charge $975 for a part (labor not included) that was recalled on the same make/model is extremely excessive.

The service airbag message appears when there is a person in the passenger seat of the vehicle. The dealer said it is due to the passenger presence module. An internet search for "2007 Equinox passenger presence module" reveals that there is a known issue with the passenger presence sensor (pps) on this vehicle. The passenger side airbag will not deploy in the event of an accident due to the defective sensing system/part. The manufacturer should repair this system/part before an injury due to the defect occurs.

While driving the airbag sensor for the passenger seat shut off then turned back on repeatedly. Then sensor is not correctly identifying when there is as passenger in the front passenger seat, and the airbag is then automatically shut off. When it was taken to the dealership we were told that there are two sensors that are not working correctly for the passenger presence system. Unfortunately the VIN number is not in the 2007 recall listed affected VIN numbers, even though it is having the same sensor problem.

I have not had an accident, so the above date, mileage and speed are estimates. While traveling down the highway, the service airbag light came on. The passenger airbag light also went off. It later came back on. My wife was sitting in the passenger seat at the time. Any time we go somewhere, this happens numerous times. I feel this is a defect in the sensor under the seat cushion in the passenger seat. I have noticed that the NHTSA has a recall on 437 units for this problem and your campaign # is 07V34400. According to the man named rob I spoke with at GM, my vehicle was not included in that recall. I feel this is a very serious problem and don't feel like my wife or either one of my children would be protected in the event of an accident where the airbag needs to deploy. It may not due to this defective sensor. I would like to know if you can offer any assistance in getting this taken care of without me having to pay for it. I am on disability income and trying to support a family of four leaves no money for such things. I feel like GM should have to cover this, since it's a defect on their part, and not mine. Is there any way you could add my vehicle to the recall now that I've made you aware of it and given you the VIN #? we're planning a 1,500 mile round trip on the 23rd of June to travel to our church convention and would like to have this problem rectified before making the trip, if at all possible. Thanks for your time and attention.

I have a 2007 Chevy Equinox that I purchased 2nd hand. The passenger air-bag would not engage (it had an X through it) when my wife sat in the seat. I took it to my mechanic who suggested that I try putting a cushion on the seat. I bought a 1" thick cushion and the air-bag light has worked (indicating that the air-bag is engaged) every time since. A simple fix to a potentially life-threatening problem!

I had told the Chevy dealer the air bag sensor light states "warning please service" they told me it was an old code. A few months later I readended another driver and my airbags did not open up. They did crack because I felt the burn on my arms. Yet, I'm being told it was an old code and there is nothing wrong with them. Now the light stays on all the time and no one will listen to me. I'm afraid there could be a malfunction and it could hurt me or my family, but no one will listen to me.
